    Finally shot my P-1.

Ever since I was a wee lad, I thought the Walther P-38 was the best-looking pistol ever made. Frankly, I still do.

20+ years ago, I fulfilled my childhood dream of owning one--sort of--by purchasing an "arsenally refurbished" P-1 at the LGS. I had never fired it, though... until this last weekend when I finally asked myself, "Why not?" So my son and I put 100 rounds of Federal Champion through it at the range.

Dang, I like it! I mean, the sights are atrocious and the double-action is way too far on the heavy side (smooth, though), and then there's the Euro mag release to deal with, but what a fun, well-balanced, easy handling, comfortable little shooter it is! It never hiccupped once, either. I can guarantee it won't be another 20 years before I shoot it again.

FWIW, I also took a Kahr K40 with us and we put 100 rounds of WWB through that, too. [I know, it's not a C&R, but it is discontinued so... sort of an honorary curio maybe?] God I love (metal) Kahrs! Yes, like everyone else, I wish it had a shorter reset; but the trigger was designed to mimic a DAO revolver, and by golly they accomplished what they set out to do. Regardless, Kahrs are some damn fine pistols.

But both my son and I agree that the star of the day was the P-1.

is this a steel framed gun or aluminum? If aluminum, does it have the steel hex reinforcement?

Yes, it has an aluminum alloy frame.

No, mine's an old school P1. There is no steel hex bolt, and the slide serrations are fully to the rear of the safety lever, so I assume it's an unwidened slide as well. Plain black sights, too (vs bar-dot).

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the sales ad at the time said it was manufactured in the '60s. There's a "3/66" stamped on the right side of the slide, if that means anything.

I have an arsenal refurbished P-38, made in 1960-1, reworked in 1982-2, I believe. It has the hex bolt.

I did not like shooting it when I shot it a few years ago. It was throwing rounds all over the target. Maybe it?s a Walther thing. I have a PK380 that does the same to me.

I might give it another try one of these days.

That's one of my favorite things about that gun. It's so fun to be at a range like Burro that doesn't have dividers between shooters and pull this out. The looks on most peoples faces on the left are hilarious as they see shells coming at them from their right.
                Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

I have an 82 P1,. Though it functions flawlessly, it's landing on the target has much to be desired. Not the most accurate 9mm I own
