British rifles are a rich collecting field and somewhat addicting. One of the things that make them so much fun to collect is that the thrifty British kept reusing their old receivers and adapting them to the, then current, standards.

I have an Enfield that started life in 1903 as a CLLE MkI*, modified later and another (*) was added. In 1915 it was rebuilt in India into a No3 Mk1. I find this kind of nerdy historical stuff interesting and am always on the lookout for rifles that have a story to tell.

In the 1980s Big 5 used to sell the Lee-Enfields for cheap. Anyone remember them? At the time I thought they were just some old junk guns. Kicking myself now but I was too young to own one anyways.

I got my first no4 from big 5 probably in like 2000 or so. Spike bayonets can be found cheap, if you can get Greek surplus for less than 80cpr, buy it, especially if it comes with chargers. Stay away from Indian and paki surplus....

As late as 2005 they could be had at Big 5 for 120 bucks on sale.

In the early 1990's Century Arms and Interarms were importing a lot of Lee Enfield No 4 Mk1*s, SMLE No 1 Mk III*. They were selling around 100 dollars or less by the chain stores like Big 5, Turners, and local LGS. That's when I bought a small collection. I paid about 60 dollars for a Enfield made SMLE No. 1 Mk III* which after I cleaned up was a really good rifle. Those were good times for Lee Enfield rifle collectors.
