    Big 5 Garand

So, I stopped by Big 5 today and checked out an H&R M1 Garand that was on the rack. Poor condition. Rust on parts and receiver. Barrel was unique. Never seen some of the markings before. But worn. Listed price, a cool $799.00. Ouch!!!!! Would pay over $250.00 for this rifle.

Remember the Greek Rack Grades that CMP had? Way better condition than this one and cheaper.

Oh yes, after reading post about Garands at Big 5 I went to go see for myself while visiting some retired folks I served with in Pasadena. ALL were in very poor condition, and I would not recommend anyone try shooting them. Broke my heart though, all those nice pieces of history just degraded in to crap condition. I'd buy them as wallhangers for $75 a pop. They need to slash a digit off the price so they can go to a collector's home.

For $200 I might buy one to restore. For what they're asking, you could find one in reasonable condition on the private market. And of course from the CMP, you could get a gorgeous rifle for that price (or a very nice one for less), provided you're patient.

Reminds me of when a few months back Big 5 had the $999 M1 Carbines that looked like they were just carried out of the jungle.

            Those really are garbage.

Their Carbines are nothing to write home about, either...

There was one in a Nor Cal big 5 in a town called Petaluma that had a decent looking Garand... course it had cosmoline all over it. I think the price was in between 600 and 800 but I didnt see any rust.

You are probably better off getting a refurbished one from Atlantic Arms.

For $1000, why not get a CMP Special Grade rifle.

Or, for half that price, a service grade rifle with the new CMP production stock...

Why not just pick up a good M1 at a gunstore? Maybe Big 5 has better M1s?

The garand they had up at the Convoy San Diego store was pretty dismal also. I mentioned how crappy it looked, and lamented the lack of available ammunition for them, and the clerk said (in a perky voice) "Sure we have plenty of ammo for it!" pointing to the boxes of Remington 180gr Core-lokt on the shelf...
The fool didn't even believe me when I told him the facts...

Ooohhh...shooting that ammo out of a Big 5 grade M1 would be a bad and dangerous way to learn a lesson...

The clerk who showed me the Garand at the Convoy SD store was clearly high. I remarked that it was in very poor shape and he said, "Oh they don't get any better than that!"

I had to just walk away from that one.

I saw one last weekend at the Palmcaster Big 5, wow, what a scary piece of junk. It looked like it had either been under water or had been left in the jungle for a while. The wood was rotted and the metal wasn't much better.
Not sure who would pay $800 for that.
