I own several 28-2 revolvers .They shoot Laser straight and have never had binding issues with the cylinder. If there was a issue in that respect I’d think a gunsmith would cut the forcing cone down a bit, not mill off the front face of the cylinder . Brownells actually makes a kit to do it yourself if the problem ever arises.

Colt brought out the cheaper Trooper III and eliminated most of the hand work but kept the nice bluing.
S&W countered with the Highway Patrolman and kept the hand worked action but put a budget bluing job with little or not polishing.

Hand worked wins out, for me....

This is the 4" that is in jail at my FFL awaiting the "cooling off" period to expire.

Auction pics...better when I get my hot little hands on it.

Actually, the Highway Patrolman pre dates the Trooper MkIII by 15 years. the Highway Patrolman, later called the Model 28 was introduced in 1954 and the Trooper MkIII was first made in 1969. The first Colt Trooper (called the "3-5-7"), was introduced in 1953, the year before S&W brought out the Highway Patrolman. The Trooper, like the Python (introduced in 1955) was built on Colts' "I" frame and used the same lockwork. The "I" frame was smaller than their New Service pistol which was what they previously had been using as their DA .357 Magnum revolver.

I have a 1968 Trooper, which was the last year of production for that model. The action is very smooth and quite similar in feel to my '64 vintage Python. The MkIII has simpler action which was easier to manufacture and required less hand fitting than the earlier Trooper/Python lockwork and had the added benefit of being a bit more robust.

Smith and Wesson revolvers are a work of art.

I have one that has a great trigger job on it. It has the 4in barrel but came with an extra brand new 6 inch barrel. No box Has some holster bluing loss. I paid $550 4 years ago. I almost like it as much as my python

So, I finally got a chance to take my S&W M28 out for a spin today, and was pretty impressed. I started out at 25 yards, shot 50 rounds, and then moved in to 15 yards and shot 50 more. Finished off with another 50 of just fooling around, for a total of 150 rounds fired off-hand. No stickiness, no jamming up, no issues. Bottom line, I think this is the finest shooting center-fire revolver I have. I really, really like it.

                      1st 6 rounds at 25 yards:

Changed to a smaller target (one inch squares), and shot 50 more. Make a slight adjustment on the rear sight halfway though, which moved the grouping from the big hole at 3 o'clock to the big hole at 12 o'clock:

Got this M28 no dash in 2001 for $300. Right side was rust speckled from being left in a sock drawer, but a decent bead blast made that all disappear and I stayed with the matte blue finish after that.

Wears a set of old Fitz Gunfighters and has been fun shooter ever since.
