I'd wait another year or so and pay the extra $400 in apprecation for the same gun. And in the meantime you can buy a
POS revolver with a special guarantee that will lose half its value while you're still jones-ing over the M28-2.

Not sure about 6" models, but I just glommed a 4" model for $ 650. It is in excellent condition, very faint drag line, slight blueing wear at the muzzle. It is a C&R, mid 60's model, with an S series s/n.

This one is pretty nice, looks like it was seldom shot, and the action is crisp and tighter than a monkey's butt.

I ended up paying $725, cash and carry. Revolver, box, paperwork - no cleaning kit.

Like the Model 27 it will out live everyone here and their kids. Under $1k IMO and that’s if 95% plus

I love vintage S&W revolvers and have a couple. With that said, the idea of a revolver designed for police / defensive use that tends to bind up while shooting is horrifying.

As stated earlier, I ended up buying the 28-2. Here's a pic of it next to my very first revolver, purchased in the early 90's. (This Model 66 is a Livermore PD trade-in that I bought at a Cow Palace gun show) .

Anyway - I find it interesting that the Model 28 is a bigger frame than the 66, but has slimmer grip panels:

And - while we're at it..... I've been on a bit of a revolver buying binge. A couple of weeks ago, I nabbed a Model 629 Classic DX:

Your Model 66 (looks like a -2) has S&W's target stocks, while the Model 28-2 has what Smith and Wesson called Magna stocks. The Highway Patrolman's came from the factory with either set depending on how it was ordered. Short of a factory letter there is really no way to tell how it was originally shipped unless you have the original box (which you do), which would specify on the end label how the gun was ordered. BTW, the red insert on the front sight was an option also.

That was true of other guns in the line up also. I have a Model 19-2 that shipped with the three T's, target hammer, target trigger and target stocks and I have another Model 19 that has none of those options.

I think S&W was still numbering the grip panels with the serial numbers until the early 80's. He could check the grips for a serial number

The Model 66 is, in fact, a -2. Good eye! Looks like the "2" was struck over another number - perhaps it used to be a -1? As I mentioned earlier, the 66 was a LPD trade-in, and came as you see it with no box or other items.

On the 28-2, the label reads "28-2 BH 6 3", for Model No., FIN., Barrel, and stock, respectively. TT and TH are blank, as are Special Features, Front Sight, and WO. The serial number on the label matches the gun, so it should be the original box.

I was just up in SE ID surveying the cattle ranch. I need to go back up in June, and plan the return trip to head over your way and visit a friend in Parma. I think I need to stop by and have a look at all this new inventory you have.

You are welcome anytime, my friend. The fire-pit and beer await you. Also - nabbed a decent Winchester SR carbine in 38-55.
