My last one (stamped P38) was a lot more beat up. I honestly didn't shoot it very often as the idea of a steel slide riding on what seemed to be an extraordinarily light weight Aluminum frame was never too confidence inspiring to me for putting thousands of rounds downrange. I would typically just shoot a few mags and move on to the next gun. Having the Hex pin makes it a bit more palatable but now that we're in the era of .32 per round 9mm, I'm not shooting thousands of round through anything.

I miss the days of going out on a Saturday with a friend or two and bring ten C&Rs out and putting at least a hundred or two hundred rounds through each. Those days are done. (sniff)

When the Glass Factory. up above Santa Barbara, was still open and I was running the Calguns Community Cleanups up there, I could get to the range at sunrise and essentially have a beautiful outdoor range all to myself or with my friends/relatives for about two hours usually before others would show up. Ammo was a lot cheaper back then too. Today, if I shot 2,000 rounds in a session with friends, that would cost a fortune, even if we were shooting up my reloads. Times have changed. The Glass Factory has closed. Ammo costs a fortune. Several of my friends who I used to go with have moved away.

The idea of going to a public range and paying all of that money and being so restricted on targets (I used to stop by the dollar store to buy some ripe cantaloupes, melons and brightly colored liters of soda to put out with all of my steel) and being around a lot of typically unsafe shooters who have questionable gun handling just isn't as appealing to me anymore. In SoCal, there just aren't very many places where one can legally and safely shoot alone, outdoors, without driving 6-7 hours round trip. I can go to Piru, but to rent a private range for just 2-3 hours is hundreds of dollars.

I need to move to America where doing this is still possible. My dream is to buy a piece of property with a hillside and build a Hickok45 type of range on my property. That would be heaven.

              .
Piru is the place, membership and discuss their "members only" ranges with them, it costs less than you might think, it does cost of course, but for me it is worth it.

I will never shoot on a public CA firing line again, it is a liability on several fronts, won't do it again, lesson learned (several times over,) moving on.

Capy and Pit, I know it's a drive for both of you. But if you're ever in the I.E. near the Cajon pass and are in the mood to do some shooting you need to try out my new favorite range, Route 66 Shooting Park. https://r66ssp.com/

I only go during the week and I've been there for 4 hours before with not one peep about my time being up. All of their lanes are "private" in that you and your group are the only ones that will be shooting there. If you go to the Steel Gallery it is open to all there.

I'll need to do a bit more research on the P5 then. Really didn't know that they took a lot of the P38/1/4 to design it.

That is an elegant Walther P1 you have there Capybara, worthy of the finest collections. I m fortunate to own one that I bought from another CG member who posted to this very thread. Here it is with its' older brother:

Walther seems to make very fine handguns that have evolved well over the decades. As much of a Glock guy as I am, I admit that my Walther PDP is a much more ergonomically friendly pistol with the best factory striker fired trigger, bar none.

Good tip Morrcarr67, thank you. I just put it into my phone, unfortunately 2 hours each way without rush hour traffic. Not that I cannot do it, I will likely still go check it out sometime, but four hours driving is a long day for 2-4 hours shooting.

I have a rental house in Adelanto, it's the same, almost two hours each way without traffic from me. It kills me here in Ventura County when I take the 118 and the back roads out in the ranches and farms near Moorpark to Fillmore, tens of thousands of acres out there. I need to get to know some land owners out there who will let me go out there and shoot but I don't know any Pro 2A cool land owners out there. There really is nothing like having a good shooting spot 20 minutes from home.

Way back when I was managing gun stores---I had an eye out for a Walther P4 after shooting a friend's P4 and liking it---didn't find a clean one at the right price---did find a brand new in box commercial P5 hiding in inventory of a major store I was managing and was able to buy it at wholesale---nobody wanted a low-cap 9mm in the mid 80s---amazingly good trigger and great shooter---I've seen P5s selling for crazy prices lately... I should have picked-up a P5C back then, but didn't move fast enough...

Walther P5:Walther P5 Compact: Made 1988 - late 1990s, it's a shorter and lighter version of the full size P5. Approximately 6,500 were made for the commercial market with P5 Compact marked on the slide. Approximately another 8,500 made for Police and Military.

                              Progression of Post-War 38s, from a rare 1955 - 1957 steel-frame, to a P4, to a P38K, to the P5, and lastly the P5 Compact:
