In the mid 90s I bought one of the “less wood” M1s the CMP offered. They sent me a 6 digit SA dated to Dec of 1941.It was a post war rebuild and had a ‘47 barrel. I picked up a nice period stock set from Northridge sales and refinished it. It was a tad sloppy so I glass bedded it to NRA specs. Turned out to be the best shooting of my 4 M1s. So much that I sold the others. I’ll never sell this one.Comment

I'm in the same boat with my CMP. It looks nice, but I do prefer the "used" look, to a point. I considered swapping the wood, but this rifle has an extremely clean re-park, and all the metal parts look new too, in spite of a 6-digit serial. That would look worse I think in a beat up stock. So I've just left it as-is.Comment

My two stocks arrived today. I opted for the "USGI, Korean, Hardwood" ones, at $58 each. The two I received are filthy and grimy, but intact with no cracks or major gouges. Both have the "P" cartouche on the inside of the pistol grip, and one has "RRAD" on the left side of the butt-stock. Both are stained dark walnut, but the grain might be birch - I'm going to strip them to bare wood and find out.Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? At first, I thought that they were walnut stained birch. On second thought, after I stripped the stocks and took a good look I think they are walnut. The have the right color for walnut, but the grain structure doesn't look "right". I know that they were take-offs from Korean rifles because of the Korean characters that were on the sides before I stripped the finish off. I'm going to give them a light sanding to get the whiskers off, and then stain and BLO them to see what I get.

If your "beautiful" stock was refinished, then the cartouches probably were sanded off when they refinished it to remove all the dents.Comment

So, you're going to ruin a piece of GI hardwood with BLO? Not surprised but typical interweb BS. Know that the WAR Dept, nor the DOD, nor Springfield Armory, nor HRA, nor IHC, nor Overton never, ever used BLO on Garand Wood.......
Oh, I forgot to included Winchester........
Please find, link, or quote any info you have that arsenal refurb facilities sanded off existing markings from Garand wood.... I would really appreciate the info..Last edited by sofbak; 04-20-2022, 8:32 PM.Tire kickers gonna kick,

Sure, completely RUIN.
IIRC, the DOD spec was to dip the stocks in Linseed Oil. How, exactly, does Boiled Linseed Oil ruin the wood? Do the fibers disintegrate? Does the wood turn a lovely shade of heliotrope?, does BLO turn the stock into a newt?
Plenty of Garand stocks have been refinished using BLO, and while maybe not exactingly correct, they have a very nice "military like" finish and look "correct"Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

It's right here->
Check out the deal on Stock, Walnut, G.I. Surplus (Refinished - Good Condition (No Metal Included) at Numrich Gun Parts
Also note that I never claimed that Numrich Arms "arsenal refurb facility" they just simply say the stocks are refinished to remove dents. While I personally take effort to retain cartouches when cleaning up a stock, I noticed that not every stock refinisher expends the same effort.
Also note that I was making a comment to the OP on the link that the OP posted - I wasn't addressing you.Comment
