Have you ever been to the Hornet floating museum in Alameda? It's an Essex class carrier modernized with angle deck, but the hangar bay is the original size, engine rooms are original, and they have some old planes on her. If he's never been, it might make a good weekend, and as a veteran, he'd get discounts I believe, certainly he'd get the royal treatment. The smell! it smelled just like my old ship, and if all old ships have that smell, it would transport him back instantly. I don't think you could give him a better present. It might even open him up some.

SO that also explains no mum?
        Yup!

As has been said ammo is available from Graf and sons for about 15-20 dollars a box.

Agree with Scarecrow- the Hornet is an Awesome experience. Got to do an overnight stay on her with my son's cub scout troop and it was unforgettable.Taking your grandfather along would probably be a worthwhile experience. One of my favorite things is to go with my grandfather to B17 exhibits at airfields(he was a B17 flight engineer) and I wish I could do it more often

I have done this as well and it was one of the most rewarding things to date. Flag ceremony on the deck at first light was breathtaking. This year we were there for Veterans Day honor, and flag ceremony truly a gift to be there. I met a fellow calgunner there at the gun display table.

10am - 4pm 7 days a week, closed T-day, Xmas, 1/1. The gate closes at 4pm but they don't kick visitors out until 5. Get there early and find out when specific tours start, or call ahead of time and ask. The engine room, for instance, is only available by guided tour, I think.
