    Need help identifying this rifle

    Hi,
I have looked at this rifle on my Grandpa's wall since I was a kid. He is getting up in age and decided to give the gun to me. He says he brought it home from WW2 and that in his words...it's a Jap rifle. Thats all I know about it. I can't find any writing on it. I know some of the Japanese rifles had a mum and that most were ground off. This has no mum but no evidence of grinding or rebluing. Infact, some of the bluing has turned an interesting plum color. The bore looks mint. No import marks so I don't think he is BSing me. The stock looks to be developing a slight crack but other than that, it looks good for it's age. Excuse the layer of dust. Can anyone help?

By the way, I couldn't attach files directly to the thread. The manage attachments button wouldn't even work. Sorry for the links.

I'm by no means a Japanese expert but I do believe that is indeed an Arisaka but the bolt doesn't look right? maybe a type 38. Provided is a link to one of the formost boards. I'm sure you will find everything you need to know.
          Good luck

Wow, thanks guys. I thought it was some sort of Mauser at first too. Especially the way the trigger group and mag are attached, but the chamber is way too small to be an 8mm. Do I not have enough posts to post pictures or something? Thanks for fixing it.

It is a Japanese Type "I" rifle. The Japanese couldn't meet production with their factories, so they contracted with Italian arms makers. The result is a mix of Carcano and Arisaka features, chambered in 6.5 Japanese. I have heard that most were issued to the navy and didn't see much service. The aren't very common, but I don't think there is a lot of collector interest.

Its a Japanese Type I (as in Italian) it is a japanese rifle made on a Carcano action using the japanese magazine and floorplate for the japanese. It is chambered in 6.5x50 jap. worth maybe 300 + in complete matching condition. estimated 60,000 produced IIRC. I have one thats been sporterized but that one is in GREAT shape.

My Grandpa was in the Navy. Not sure if thats a connection or not. Not too interested in collector interest as I am very sentimental about things given to me by him. Thanks for the info though. I bet ammo is tough to find.

Its just a matter of hitting the correct buttons.

When your posting and you have copied a URL of a pic with the right button you then click on the little yellow box at the top of the white box a little to the right of center and then you put the URL in there removing the "http://" that's already in it and then click OK. that's all there is to it you have half of the problem licked you have the photo bucket account already that's a good start.

Nice rifle BTW my uncle brought 3 of those back from WWII from what I remember.

You can still get 6.5 JAP from Sportsmans Guide. It's made by Hornady. Graf & Sons also sells the Hornady 6.5 JAP along with some made by PCI. Graf & Sons gives the FFL discount too.

Man, if your gramps is still kickin' go get all the Navy war stories you can get out of him. Mine died when I was 12 so I didn't know better then but I did get a lot of WWII Navy stories out of the guy across the street and it was awsome hearing what he went through. I was in the Nuclear Navy and felt unworthy of calling myself a Sailor after having heard his stories.

I get all the stories I can. He is a survivor of the carrier Wasp sinking in Sept. of 42'.

I go to the reunions with him every year. Some stuff, he either dosn't remember or dosn't want to talk about.
