Should I get special grade CMP garand?

Well. i am new to the CMP. Ordered a service grade M1 and a service grade M1C, now the special grade garands are available again (or at least I remember them being out of stock when I ordered) I have a few questions...
For the special grade M1 garand, is it going to be more accurate than a service grade?

What kind of barrel is it? I know it says new manufacture, but is it of similiar quality and durability as the original?

I am also not sure if the original barrel is chrome lined.

Would you guys reccomend me getting the special grade? This gun is going to be my shooter, so I really want accuracy out of it, I will probably be hand loading in the future, probably with an adjustable gas block to get what I can out of the cartridge. So what do you think?

The 'special' grades use the excellent Criterion barrel and the original GI barrels were not chrome lined and neither are the criterion barrels. The CMP also used the boyds stock sets (YUCK).

$595 - Service Grade SA 1.3M (WWII-era w/ lock bar sights, Danish military VAR barrel)





I had both for a while. Although, I felt VERY LUCKY to have scored the SA 1.38M, lock-bar sights, VAR barrel w/ 0 MW, Service Grade, I sold the Service Grade. I just like the "Special" just a tiny bit more. If I had another $900 for a Garand, I'd get another "Special". I just prefer the "new-ness" of it.

I don't mind the CMP/Boyd's wood as long as it's walnut. The NEW birch ones they put on some Service grades are just BLAH. If you're looking for a shooter, new CMP walnut is certainly better than loose fitting 50 year old, mis-matched wood.

As for accuracy, I haven't shot it for groups yet. I can't imagine new CMP barrels being "worse" than 50 year old, used, GI barrels.

Haha, very true... Although I can probably only keep one when I turn 21, Iwill need hand gun money
