Then again, I joined the artillary, in part, for the same reason!

I was thinking you might buy online. Costa Mesa is a little far for me.

I'm not looking to become a reneactor, but I do find the Civil War period fascinating. Wouldn't mind attending a reenactment sometime. I grew up on the East coast and had the opportunity to visit some battlefields.

There used to be a re-enactment at Ardenwood Farms (it might still be going on, I just haven't gone to it in several years), just across the bay from you. Also, there are other re-enactments in your neck of the woods. Check out: http://www.warhorse.org/events.html. But, remember that some of their events are not re-enactments. I'd suggest going to the Fresno or the Russian River event if you want to see great shows in Northern California.

here is a list of some up coming northern California events.

Here is a site that might help you find sutlers of quality.

For full line mass produced kit, I have always felt Jarnagin was a good choice. There was a time when if you were Jarnagin head to toe you were the envy of the camp. As knowledge has increased, they are no longer considered the end all of authenticity. So, depending on your level of pickyness for detail, they might not be your one stop shop anymore.

C & D Jarnagin Sutlery provides, to the reenacting community, quality Civil War uniforms and civilian clothing, French and Indian War Uniforms, Revolutionary War Uniforms, War of 1812 Uniforms, Mexican War Uniforms, shoes, leather goods, tin, etc. for Men 1750 1776 1779 1812 1830 1840 1860 1861 1862 1863 1864 1865

thanks. I will keep that in mind. I have thought about artillery in place of a mounted cav impression.

Of course, you can always do mounted artillary with CHAS/3rd US. They are a great bunch of guys. I've fallen in with them at several events (I know, I have bben know to cross dress on occassion) over the years. There's nothing like being a limber rat while going over uneven terrain at full gallop! If you like to ride and want to be a teamster, they are always looking for riders. But, if you want to play with the largest artillary unit west of the Mississippi, you'll be falling in with my unit. The Artillary offer a few advantages over other disiplines like, you don't need a small arm, you don't need to cleen your small arms, you don't need to buy a lot of leather, you don't need to buy your own powder!!!!!! and, you get to make a bigger bang and more smoke!

Ya, chas is a great out fit. I still remember when they brought out the first full scale cannon + horse + limbers the works to a roaring camp event. This was when NCWA was still doing roaring camp and CHS was sill a part of the NCWA as the 3rd US Arillary...Yikes, dating my self. Everyone thought it was the coolest thing. Made us in the 1st va cav have to work a bit harder chasing them around the battlefield now that they were mobile.

Not having to clean a musket is one of the reasons I have been thinking Artillary should I ever get back into reenacting. CHS is probably where I would head. Camp war horse isn't too far from me.

This was always one of my favorites when I was still active. Little cramped if you have a good turn out, but probably one of the best sites for doing a reenactment in my opinion.

If your in the bay area, it's a easy drive out to the coast and makes for a good family outing. Roaring Camp has of course their steam train rides, music, and BBQ. Throw in a Civil War Reenactment, what more could you want?

I don't know if they still do it, but Roaring Camp used to have weekends where a group called Shadows of the Past would do mock robberies (now this was a lot of fun) and they also used to host mountain man rendezvous.

Most likely, there is a fellow in the Northern Artillery who has a 3" rifled Parrot gun that hangs bed sheets with a X on them and shoots at 5,000 ft .
