I'm not really a shotgun guy......

But I couldn't resist picking up the Winchester Model 12 the other day for three bills. Serial number dates it to 1917 and it is as tight as a new one. It came with a pretty nice leg-o-mutton case and a vintage cleaning rod. With a 30" barrel and a full choke, I think it was made as a duck gun. It shows the classic wear pattern of a shotgun that was hunted with for years, lots of bluing wear at the balance point when you are carrying it and a few bumps and bruises on the wood. The barrel and magazine tube ahead of the receiver have around 90% of the bluing.

I think I am going to cut the barrel down to 18" and drill and tap the receiver for a holographic sight and maybe cerakote it along with painting the wooden parts flat black..

    Nah, not really.

Great shotgun. That case is worth a hundred bucks.

I was expecting to read later that you were kidding. Thank God you were.

Very nice acquisition and the case to boot.

              You, You wise guy you

              ... You got me.

It looks great to me. It's been there and done that but is still running strong.

The original case and that cleaning rod that could double as a cannon ramrod are pretty cool too.

And you should have mentioned you're getting pistol grip to put it over the top with your paint job.

And I wanted to add for anyone who doesn't remember...
The Model 12 was THE pump shotgun before the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 took over the market (with lower prices).

That thing is a beauty. Plus the ability to slam-fire IMO is more than 3 Franklins.

Congrats. That's a nice looking shotgun. Any plans to hunt with it?

I'm not a hunter and I think that with the long barrel and full choke it was probably meant to be a duck or goose gun. I have been on the internet searching for different barrels as I am thinking that I might try to find a shorter barrel assembly (so it will be a quick change arrangement), but all I can find so far is 28 and 30 inch full choke barrels. Oh well, this won't be the first time I have bought a gun that I have no earthly use for.....and it probably won't be the last time I do it either.

                          Nice model 12.

I have it's twin. My grandfather picked it up at a garage sale for $10 back in the 60s.
Yes, at some point in our past, you could do that here in CA. I don't think he ever shot it much, as it still looks nearly new.

I haven't shot it either. While I know they are good shotguns, I have so many other less dear to me scatter guns that I have no need to take it out.

It will be passed down to my son at some point.

Nice grab. I remember blasting away with my Dad's when I was a kid. His was set up like a trench shotgun.
