You can do fine with just about anything you like.

I hunt deer with an early Savage 99 in .250-3000 (100+ year old caliber), a 4 digit serial number Win Model 70 in .30-06, as well as some newer stuff.

For shotguns, my absolute favorite and most used is an early Winchester Mod 37 Red Letter single shot in 28ga. Great light weight pheasant gun.

I also shoot a couple early 12ga side by sides, a couple early Browning A5s, and a Win Model 1897 pump. My 2nd favorite is an early 50s Browning Belgium Superposed. I may buy a modern gas shotgun to hunt ducks this year, but we'll see.

All of these guns are older than me, and have no problem taking any game if I do my part and aim right. I hope the Calgunners that sold me these over the years would be proud.

But then again you could be just as happy with something like a Ruger American bolt action and scope for $500-600. Don't have to worry about scratching it, etc.

I picked up a nice one similar to SVT's. A Smith Corona 03A3 donor. Beautiful specimen of a bygone era. $200 bucks a few years ago at a LGS. I didn't need it, but at that price I couldn't let it slip by. PAX

How about a 104 year old C&R of a type that was used to kill game in India, Africa, Scotland, and Canada back in the day? The .303 cartridge will kill anything in North America with a bullet of the proper construction.

I routinely hunt with shotguns 70-100 years old. Interestingly enough they shoot small pellets at flying and scurrying game the same as newer shotguns choked the same. Steel is generally a no go however, so some concessions must be made.
