New job, travel to China, safe to SKS?

    Good morning folks!

I have a new job, that will entail semi-frequent trips to China.

Being an 03/COE holder, as far as OUR government is concerned, I'm able to make purchases of C&Rs.

It would be really cool to come home on one trip with a C&R SKS...
It would be even cooler if I didn't end up rotting in a Chinese prison somewhere!

Would you guys even attempt something like this? If so, where would you start? Are there people you can call (US embasy?) who know how this works?

Note, I'm not asking about becoming an importer, not a reseller, just a simple purchase to bring home one, maybe two SKSs.

Pretty sure you need to go through an 01 FFL who would fill out an ATF Form 6 Part 1 (Application and Permit for Importation of Firearms, Ammunition and Implements of War). Not sure how you would obtain the firearm and legally export it from China. Also, pretty sure the Chinese SKS in specific was banned from importation in 1994.

Yes I'm sure the Chinese would be very impressed with your 03 FFL and especially the COE.

I'd be more impressed with all those Chinese gun stores that are on every corner, ready to sell to any Westerner with cash in hand. Oh wait...

Actually, if you send the documents ahead of time, it can qualify for a free upgrade to first class and a formal red carpet greeting ceremony on the tarmac.

It is kind of a big deal.

Although not as cheap as they once were, I'd recommend figuring out exactly what you want and just get it on Gunbroker. There are hundreds available at any given time. As much as I love Chinese SKS, they are common and can still be found in mint condition for well under $500

There are a few simplified import provisions, but I doubt any of them even remotely apply to China. I obtained an ATF import permit once, bought an over under shotgun in Turkey for cash, and brought it back to the US. I had to leave it with customs for a week of paperwork even as I carried my issued belt fed stuff right on through. I’ve not heard of any other streamlined import processes.

If your new employer hears of you even attempting to purchase firearms whilst on company business, you may be out of the job very quickly. Regardless of legality, your status as a license holder, etc.

Most company HR departments are very squeamish with even the mention of a firearm, and California is an at-will employment state.

As other folks mentioned, just get one through CA-legal channels on Gunbroker.

No, you can't import a SKS on your C&R 03 FFL. You can however import other firearms with the proper paperwork.

A holder of a Type 03 FFL. A licensed collector may obtain an approved ATF F 6 (Part I) import permit to import rifles and shotguns, other than surplus military rifles and shotguns, which have been classified as curio or relics, for their personal collection. A licensed collector may also import a handgun, other than a surplus military handgun, which has been classified as curio or relic. for their own personal collection provided the handgun meets the sporting criteria for on*ATF F 5330.5 (Form 4590).

                    Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

Remember since the Clinton ban on Chinese military type weapons, the chances of getting it over here are pretty much zero. You can't even get Chinese guns out of Canada, much less China. You would spend all kinds of $$$$$$$$ for pretty much nothing but grief. For a while Chinese shotguns and sporting guns came in, but now even those don't anymore. As Bobby R said, get one at gun show, or Gunbroker, here, Gunboards, and save money and needless grief.

OP I couldn't find any surplus stores while I was there. Can't imagine trying to find a gun store. Though I did take a pic of the Norinco building.

Chest rigs/wood stocks/stripper clips might be an option.

But..its commie china, mere civilians and guns do bot mix lest they get restless. How else do you support murdering any females being born? Or "used to".

No firearms imports from China thanks to Bush I. Clinton is responsible for the block on SVT and other firearms from Russia. Also no importing Military firearms with FFL03 or FFL01. Only FFL08 or FFL11 can import military firearms in their original configuration and they must be in a country that is not banned for 5 years. China fails that test as well.
