    CMP Garands came!

    Good morning gents!

I am the proud caretaker of two CMP Service Grade US Rifles, .30 Caliber, M1!

I watched some videos, did a nearly complete break down (left the trigger groups intact) and gave each a thorough cleaning.

While cleaning the bore of the first one, with an OTIS pull-through brush and patches, toward the muzzle end there was a pronounced "easy" spot where the brush was clearly not engaging anything, and then I would get resistance again just before exiting the muzzle.

I have attached a photo here, it looks like there is an obvious and deep ring of ... nothing, at a particular spot in the bore. I am concerned!

Could you guys give this a look? Best picture I could take with a cell phone and my novice skills. Tell me what you think. Is this shootable? Should I report it to CMP?

    Thank you all!

Uh oh. Looks like a ringed barrel to me...clean it some more so it can be inspected better but what you describe doesn't sound good.

I would be sending CMP that picture along with your description.

I agree with 81turbota...if it were a rack grade, I wouldn't complain, but a service grade should be better then that.

I would be concerned too. I'd definitely call the CMP on that one.

Definitely not a Service Grade. CMP must have missed that. They should make it right.

              Thanks guys,

I sent in an email to customer service. Hopefully they can get this squared away. Fortunately I got 2 so I still have one to take out to the range!

                If you're a C&R/COE holder, you're set.

If not....the CMP will likely send you a replacement rifle if that is indeed a ringed barrel. This will mean another transfer and dros fee.

That's a bummer, can you feel a raised portion of the barrel on the outside of that spot? Run your fingers down the barrel, do you feel a little bump or bulge where that ring part is?

Might could request a re-Bbl. instead.

You might want to shoot it first.

Sometimes barrels look bad but shoot well.

Man, that is an ugly bore even without the ring (or whatever that is?) ...

Strip it to bbl and receiver return and have CMP replace the bbl. Ship direct to CMP, should be no DROS or waiting period when returned, I believe.

Sorry about your barrel, that's no good!

Out of curiosity, how long did you have to wait for your service grades? And did you hear anything from CMP before they shipped? I sent in an order a couple of weeks ago and haven't heard anything, but the backlog was months so I'm being patient...
