I have a '52 pre-microgroove Mountie (not for sale) and a '53 post MG(if I remember correctly) standard 39a & both have run flawlessly since I got them & I really didn't pay that much for either one... that said they were both found on the consignment racks in shops rather than here on calguns - that said it took me about 3 years to find the 1st one.

also I have still not managed to have the time to dig into mine to try and see what all is going on & what could be causing your problem... but I haven't forgotten about it either

Is your loading gate loose? Screw on the right side will tighten it up.

OK - so, the new cartridge stop spring arrived today, and I installed it. Same issue. Every now and then, infrequently and at random, the action locks up when opened.

I inspected the bolt, and found that the forward part of the bolt that catches the rear of the next round had some peened edges, so I carefully stoned them until smooth. No joy.

I then bent the cartridge stop spring up, down, and everywhere in between. No joy.

So - I cycled the gun endlessly with dummy rounds in order to get it to fail. Every time it failed and I took it apart either a round fell out loose, or (more often) was hung up halfway out of the magazine tube. Hmmmm...... I pushed the magazine tube in with a wooden dowel, and felt it hang up once or twice at random during its travel. I cleaned the tube out and gave the inside a light (very light) coat of oil, and reassembled. I then cycled about 7 magazine tubes full of ammo through the action without a failure. Hmmmm, again.

Is it fixed? Don't know for sure. But I do know that with the action open and rounds in the tube, if I manually depress the cut-off spring the next round comes flying out of the magazine tube. So, the magazine tube spring is good. I'm thinking that every once in a while the magazine tube plunger was getting hung up on some crud and not applying enough feed pressure to the magazine follower, so the next round to feed just went halfway or so and hung up on the spring.

Off to the range tomorrow to test it with live fire exercises. Keeping my fingers crossed......

I'm with you on that. Assuming it is fixed, what burns me is that I spent $20 and waited 4 days for a part I didn't need. If I had applied just a bit more analytical skills to the problem, I could have set it right without spending a dime. Tuition, I guess.

                  OK - good news/bad news.....

The bad news is that it hung up twice at the range, shooting about 100 - 150 rounds.

The GOOD news it that both times, it was easily fixed by partially retracting the magazine tube and then closing it smartly. So, definitely a magazine tube issue. Since the spring is strong and the tube is not dented or out of round, there must still be crud in the tube. It looks like I'm going to have to disassemble the tube and thoroughly clean it with a brush and solvents.

Any experts on how to do that without destroying it? I assume that I drift out the pin on the muzzle end, but if so, do I drive it from the long side or the flush side?

don't disassemble the tube - just run a 22 brush through it from the muzzle end and check it with a bore light... maybe leave a light coat of oil in there, but maybe not as that would attract more crud

Yeah - I tried drifting the pin out, but it wouldn't budge. I didn't want to risk damage, so I did exactly as you describe..... I ran a solvent soaked brush in the tube, and then followed up with first a wet patch and then a dry one.

If that doesn't do the trick, I'll order up a new, repro tube assembly and be done with it.

Yeah - took it to the National Levergun Silhouette Championship last week in Raton New Mexico, and it functioned flawlessly. Even managed a five in a row turkeys.
