The gas system on SVT's is finicky to say the least, but once it's dialed in to the ammo you have, it's the most fun you can have with your clothes on!
I compare it as a SKS on steroids, and the felt recoil is less than my SKS. If it's thumping you, you don't have the gas valve setting right.
The muzzle brake will clear the benches on both sides of you, then they all want to know "WTH is that thing?".
If anyone has one with feeding or cycling issues, I'd be happy to help you out getting it dialed in.

A rubber mallet is a good tool to have when first figuring out the proper setting for your ammo. Turn it up until it works.

Additionally: Make sure your gas port is not blocked with cosmo or dirt and that the piston is clean and not corroded.

Also verify that the witness marks line up exactly from adjustment knob to gas port on barrel. Slightly off will cause issues.

Thank you Fate, I opened the gas valve a little, and now it shoots great.
although you did curse me a little, because now all I can think about is shooting it. haha

I just did a price check for SVT-40s on gun broker...

Most of them are hovering around about $1000. Some are a little below, but I was shocked!!!

Is that a "typical" SVT-40 price these days?

i ocassionally see them at Vallejo Gun show, but overpriced; Finn stamped and non refurbed svt's like Fate's are more collectable and more expensive, too. Check out Proxibid online and type in "tokarev" or "svt 40" in the search box, i think there's one coming up for auction soon. good luck!

I was at the vallejo gun show just this last weekend and there was an SVT for sale there. $1200. plus there were actually quite a few AR's and AK's there too. I even saw a few GSG's, Sig 5.56 and even some Ak 74's too. I was in the market for an AK 74 but not for $800 to $950 though. Plus the guy I was talking to was selling them like they were the last one's on earth lol! "Buy now man! Next gun show the prices are going up $150 dollars a rifle." I quietly moved on with my cash....
