    Kar98k question

Hey there I just purchased a 1942 duv Kar98k and I can't tell if it's a Russian capture or not it hard to tell for starters it's a non mtching gun with the serial number engraved into the stock however there is no electro pen markings on the bolt and no "x" mark on the rifle all of the original waffen marks are intact and the rifle has the front sight hood. I was hoping someone might have an idea of what I have here ? Thanks

If the serial number on the stock is parallel to the barrel (along the length of the buttstock) it is Soviet (Russian) capture. If the serial number is parallel to the buttplate (across the width of the buttstock) it is Yugoslavian capture.
    Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

Not all Russian Capture K98k rifles have electropencil numbers, the crossed rifles (X), and peened swastikas. I have three RCs that were prettied up by Century Arms Intl. with refinished stocks, refinished metal, and reproduction sight hoods, cleaning rods, and locking screws. A previous owner probably added the sight hood to your rifle.

Oh ok makes sense I was glad that all of the original markings are intact with no electropencil marks. I was thinking about replacing the stock with an another wwll stock with no engraving on it. Would that hurt value even though it's already an RC ? Also what is the value of a clean RC k98 these days ? Thanks

Post some pictures so we can help determine what you have. I've seen some barreled actions placed into RC stocks, so that could be a possibility.

Ok I will but the serial number on the stock matches the action so I think it's gotta be an RC

Barreled actions and rescued sporters can also be found in Yugo rework stocks.

The stock is a Yugo capture stock. While the Yugoslavians tended to refurbish and mark captured German rifles, there are some examples of the Yugos not remarking early refurbished rifles in order to arm their new army quickly. What numbered parts are matching and what parts aren't?

The only numbers that match are the barrel and action everything else is different

As I said in my earlier post before you added the pictures, if the serial number is parallel to the buttplate (across the width of the stock) as yours is, it is a Yugoslavian capture. That’s why there isn’t any electropencil or other RC characteristics. I don’t know why you said it was along the length of the stock when it isn’t.

Yes, the rifle is a likely an early-refurb Yugo capture (I'm basing this on the mismatch quality, unmolested crest, and Yugo style matching numbers on the stock). Russian captures are mismatched and tend to have Electro-penciled numbers on the mismatched bolt and trigger guard and magazine. Romanian captures are also mismatched and tend to have any Nazi markings (whether they be the older style Weimar eagle or Nazi style Eagle over the Swastika) removed, often by filing.

Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated. Is there a difference in value between a Yugoslavia or Russian capture ?
