    Ladder sight adjustments

I have a Winchester 1890 wrf with ladder sights that I was shooting high with at 25 yds. I didn't have a lot of time to shoot so I was unable to adjust the sight low enough for that range.

Does anyone know if the different levels on the sight are set for specific distances, and if so what they are?

I know this rifle is accurate. My groups were pretty tight.

What caliber is this rifle? I am thinking if its anything comparitive to 8mm or .30-06 that you weren't shooting out far enough for the bullet to zero, which for those calibers would be between 100 and 200 yards usually. However, if its a pistol caliber rifle I dont know what to say. Lemme look up you gun right now

Wow its rimfire. I have no idea what to say except maybe those sights were meant for longer range? Try shooting out farther? Haha, Im just speculating now, sorry I couldnt help more

        It's .22 WRF, in between a .22 long rifle and .22 mag.

The ladder sight has several height adjustments for range (I can't get to it right now to see how many), but I was hoping that they are factory set for specific ranges.

Does anyone know if this is true and if so what ranges each setting is for?

.22 shoots pretty flat so if its a higher velocity round, its going to shoot even flatter, I would bet your not shooting at a far enough distance

Does anyone actually have an answer for this?

The ladder are set optimistically. They will not correspond to any set distances as WRF ammunition has changed over the last 120 years. You will have to shoot at different ranges and note what the sight settings are.

Thanks Fjold. That's what I was thinking, just hoping to avoid.

Would that hold true for a Mosin-Nagant? I love the adjustable sight on that, marked to the 10's of meters. If I'm using Russian surplus ammo will those markings be accurate?

I find that the surplus stuff varies in quality, you're never really going to get super consistent results with it...imho from what I've read and been given advice for, you want to reload to get consistent results (and distances)...but evne then imho you're going to always need to sight in anyways because you can never attest for "perfect" weather conditions.

                  cheers.

I'm just looking for approximations, not exact distances. If I have a ladder sight it'd be nice to know that the first notch, for instance, is accurate for say 25 to 50 yds, the second for 50 to 100, etc.

                      aahh, okay...well... 100 yards = 91.44 meters.

But still it's hard to say, I "think" if the sight is anything like my Finn mosin, that the lowest setting is for 100M. When you take it out the range, set it to the lowest setting pop 3 rounds off at 25 yards (center if needed) and then move to 50 yards, pop 3 rounds off, and then when you try 100 yards, you should hit the target still and then you can kinda gauge what each notch equals to. Keep in mind what ammo you're using too so that you can find the same stuff later on when you run out.

here's a great resourcebelow for mosins if you've not yet found it.

is your rear sight all the way down? move the rear sight in the direction you want your point of impact to go.

move the front sight (if you can) in the opposite direction you want the point of impact to go (so move it up if you can)
