I would stay with 8x57. Czech can usually be found for ~$400. I own German, Czech, and Persian and the Czech/Persian ones are the nicest

Mauser Variants? Prices?

Yugo, Czech and Turkish are the least expensive in 8x57, with the German and Persian being higher in price from what I've seen. The South American ones are usually in 7x57 or 7.65 and range in price depending on county with the Argentine and Chillean variants being the least expensive, and having an antique and 'modern' models, and Brazilian being the most from what I've seen. You might also find some South American ones in 30/06. Spanish Mausers are traditionally in 7x57 but can be found converted to 308, though every Spanish Maurer I've ever seen has been in rough condition. Aside from that you have some more variants in proprietary calibers such as the Sweedish or Portuguese Mauser, then you get into the rarer variants such as Belgian or Mexican ones.
There have been so many models of the Mauser adopted by dozens of countries so collecting them all is a challenge. You have the original black powder 1871 and 1871/84 in 11mm, the pre 98 models such as the 91 Argentine, 93 Spanish or 96 Sweedish, and even though it's not technically a Mauser, you also have the 88 commission rifle, but be careful with that one as it's not originally chambered in the 8x57 we know today, as it used a bullet with a slightly smaller diameter. But even then most of these counties adopted more than one model over the years such as the 1891 and 1909 versions for Argentina, and all the minor upgrades the German has for the Gew and Kar 98. The you get into manufacturer and you've just opened up another can of worms. Thankfully some versions only have one or two makes but others, such as the k98k, have dozens.Comment

So many choices, hard to pick just one isn't it.... Guess I will have to start buying 1 every once in a while to increase my collection...
Thanks for the information, this is going to be hard to decide.Comment

I didn't see anyone mention some of the best shooting and nicest looking Mausers. Many can be obtained at very reasonable prices. The South American 7x57mm Mauser Rifles. Simply a great round and they have really cool crests. Also many were made in Germany so the quality is second to none. The Steyr, Belgian, and Czech ones aren't too shabby either.
The most common ones
1895 Chilean Long
1908 Brazilian Long
1912 Chilean Long or Short
Matching examples under $400 right now. Non-Matching good shooters $250 or less.

I've been thinking more recently about picking up a beater to have the action transformed into a 7x57 or 8mm hunting rifle. It seems a few times every year you read about the dangers of small ringed Mauser.
I've done some reading on the subject and still looking for that project rifle at the right price.
Here's a good read. Enjoy.

I had a fool argue with me that you couldn't use 7.62x51 NATO in a FR-8 and you certainly could not in a FR-7 even though 7 mm Mauser from which it's receiver was designed for has the highest pressures, and Spain used 7.62 NATO after they joined. The rumors come from old overloaded Santa Barbara Ammo that was blowing apart American Made receivers IIRC.
