SHould I get an SA or an HRA garand? Sorry, but I am a total noob to garands. I really know nothing except that i've wanted one since I was like 12. I know that SA is springfield Armory. I don't know what HRA means. I am wanting a Service grade garand in one of the replacement CMP stocks that will be as clean as possible. Do you think the SA or the HRA will be more likely to be in nicer condition?

HRA is Harrison and Richardson.
there were many more SAs made than any other brand.
IIRC, HRAs are some of the cleanest machined garands. Remember that H&R was a "retail" manufacturer instead of a "war equipment" manufacturer like SA was. H&R made guns to sell to the public, so their stuff was always made to look good, and they kept that ethic for the M1. SA just had to meet the spec so there wasn't that same level of prettyness.
In the end, both of them go BANG, but the HRA may look a little sharper in the metalwork. But they're both gonna be 50+ years old, so there is gonna be wear and tear on everything.Jack
Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

I think you would be more likely to get a WWII vintage receiver with Springfield. You're more likely to get a nearly new rifle with HRA.
Springfield is the classic choice.Useless laws weaken the necessary laws.

I would get the HRA now since they will be harder to get over time...SA rifles will be around for some time. I still regret not getting the International Harvestor a few years ago when CMP had them...and any day now I will be getting my SG Winchester...which I have been waiting for for a long time!"Never argue with an idiot, they will just drag you down to their level and beat you with experiance." - anonymous

Hell yeah just sent out my order for a service grade HRA and 192 rounds. Plus I left a note asking for a clean shooter instead of more a collector type. I can't beleive I have to wait 3 to four months for this, but I'm okay with that. So probably in like two months I will have my M1 Carbine money... Am I going to have to send them my proof of birth and have to go have a range officer sign that shooting paper again? Or do they keep it on record?sigpic
