    Visted by the ATF today

I applied for a C&R FFL last October and due to a number of issues on the ATF end, it has taken forever.

I called on Tuesday to see what progress had been made and they apologized for all the delays and asked to schedule a visit. Huh ? for a C&R ?

Yep - part of an effort to educated new FFL holders on the record keeping part. Seems that through inspections they have found many C&R holders not keeping good or adequate records.

Today was the visit. The agent was super nice. She said that the FFL should arrive within 4 weeks.
Anyone press will hear the fat lady sing.

That is very interesting and good to know.

I thought with a FFL 03 you could go to the local ATF office and have your books checked there.

that is what the code says, even though people on other forums have mentioned that they were not allowed that option.

But in the OP's case, it was a pre-inspection visit before they approved his license. And that has also been happening more often as well.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Very interesting. I applied in January and had mine a few weeks later ('zact details in the "how long" thread.) Still waiting for my "informational package", but I did start a book "just in case" I get a random visit although I've not done any transactions yet and won't be able to until I get some replies from vendors I've mailed my license off to.

Maybe because I have such a unique and rare name (only a few in the US with the same first/last name, and none with the same middle name), it was easy to make sure I am who I am and they didn't have any questions as far as records. I've also done multiple "FBI" checks in the past, including some live scans within the past several years, so perhaps I was an easy one to ID. Who knows. Just seems real odd though.

The ATF came to my house to do the pre inspection also. The lady was super nice and I had my license about 2 weeks later. She said they would be doing more pre inspections, I guess she wasn't joking me. Glad to hear you will get your license.

          Happy collecting,

On a side note if you buy a C&R machine gun in NV and the owner lives in NV its sent directly to you after you receive the stamp..pretty cool if you are into NFA stuff.

I wonder where the heck the code is for that pre inspection idea. I guess it exists, but it sure wasn't happening 2.5 years ago. Another thing is this idea of them doing an annual inspection and taking a record of your serial #'s. Long guns, in theory, are unregistered........they have to go back to the importer or wholesaler to get the chain of custody, which can END when one sells a C&R ftf. I don't have a tin hat, but I don't like any of this.

must be a new policy, never heard of it before.
If an interview will be required for renewal in the future, I'd rather go to their office instead.

Got my C&R earlier this week, but didn't have to endure any visits. I'm prepared to go to the local ATF office if they ever knock.

I'm sorry, I did not take a picture.

I was told by the folks in ATL that for a while, they were asking for the applications to be forwarded to the local field office for review. they said that from about Nov on they stopped and simply said to issue directly. I got lucky I guess.

I was not in a hurry so it was not a big deal but I was wondering why.

What is the purpose of the visit?

Can it be conducted on the front porch? Do you have to let them in?
