I bought an M48 from AIM surplus back in October 2016. I've posted about this rifle before. It has a darkish bore but with strong rifling. I been trying to get it clean, so I'm shooting it to determine if it's worth my time. Yesterday I was at Angeles, and I was shooting the M48. I put 40 rounds of PPU down range using iron sights only. My target was the round steel plate at 200 yards. I think they are 12" plates. Anyway, I was able to hit the plate 70% of the time. So would it be fair to say that the rifle is a good shooter even with the dark bore?

Paper is the proof one way or the other.
A dark Bore doesn't mean it can't be a good shooter.
Good luck.

What kind of paper target should I be using for 100 yards with a rifle?Comment

I use these. SLOSA sell them at their range.
S-1 - Orange/blue or black

I use these at 100 yards. Its really easy to see where you you are shooting with these targets.
A dark bore isn't an indication of how good a shooter it will be. I've seen dark bores that are crazy accurate and bright shiney ones that are just so so. Most times innacurate shooting is the fault of the shooter and not the gun.Comment

Print some of these, best target I have found for the standard Mauser sights.

also depends on the ammo quality, the wind, are the sights correct were you shooting with a mount or on a bench. if you hit the target with a Mauser I can guarantee you 95% the target will not survive.retreat! we must go comrade we will fight again another day.Comment

I've had milsurp rifles that had dark pitted bores that seemed to never clean up until I took it to the range and put some rounds down the barrel.
I'm a bit shocked to hear about a bad bore since I don't think the Yugo M48 was used primarily as a weapon unless it was a converted K98.
The previous owner probably shot some corrosive surplus ammo that sat in the bore for years. That stuff is tough to clean off.Comment

I used some foaming bore cleaner sprayed into a hot barrel right after shooting and did some aggressive cleaning. The results were a dramatic improvement so I know this technique works in some cases. Too many wild cards to say for sure though.Comment

Damn! I could of taken the foaming bore cleaner. I forgot all about it.Comment
