    Mosin sight issues

I have a M44 that shoots consistently and radically to the left. At 100 yards it shoots about 6 to 8 inches to the left of wherever I aim. Now I know that the front sight can be adjusted for windage by taping it to one side or the other, but the sight is already moved over about 1/16 of an inch. Should I just move it over more, or is there a different problem here? I don't want to move it over too much because it looks odd, but I would rather it shoot correctly.
Is there anything else that can be done to remedy this issue?

    OK, I'll ask

Which direction has the sight been moved? If it has been moved to the right, we know what the problem is

M44s were originally sighted in with bayonet extended. Deploy it and see if it brings you back on target.

But if you're shooting too far left, move the front sight left to get it back in the black.

Sorry, should have put that in. Its moved to the left (if you are looking at it from a shooting position.)

the guy who wrote the article on world.guns.ru says the original 90/30 was sighted w/ the bayonet, but i didnt see anything that said the 44 was. Do you have an article i could read to that effect?

Forgot about that, thanks. I have heard that before, didn't think of it though.
Theres no laws against shooting with a bayonet extended are there? A long time ago someone tried to convince me it was illegal, but I didn't really buy it.
            Just being careful.

Don't listen to the paranoid rumor spreading people. You can shoot with the bayonet extended all you want, and I'll tell you what, you will be very surprised how just doing that will move your group to the right. This should fix the problem. I have an M44 that shot a few inches to the left even with the bayonet extended but instead of moving the whole front sight globe, I wrapped the front sight post with a small piece of cloth and "bent" the post to the left just a little with some needle nose plyers. If I ever want to sell the rifle I'll just move the post back to it's original position. Let us know if your group does improve with the bayonet extended though. Good luck. Aleks.

Here's a snippet from the "Design and Production" section of http://mosinnagant.net/USSR/Russian-M44-Carbine.asp
The carbine can be fired with the bayonet folded in place or extended, but it is important to note that the M44 was designed to be fired with the bayonet in the extended position. This design fact means when the bayonet is not extended, the point of aim/impact changes.
As a sidenote, some ranges (like Angeles Shooting Range in the SFV) don't allow you to shoot with bayonets attached/extended.
