I would worry about wearing out a milsurp rifle, if I thought I would live forever. I'm here, it's here, I have lots of cheap ammo, we be shootin'.

Unless, it is a one of a kind, there were literally millions (or several hundred thousand) made.

Surplus guns are for shooting (at least to me). All the talk about history is relative. Italians (for instance) piss on sides of buildings that are over 200 years old. In America, which is a relatively new country, anything over a couple of decades is considered "historical."

Just shoot it. It is easy to go down the path of buying too many because they are cheap. I used to do that until I asked myself why 5 surplus guns that you don't shoot are better than 1 top of the line modern gun and none of the justification I could come up with was a rational argument about functionality. But this is a free country in theory so whatever floats your boat.

Yeah, you're probably right that I'm being over protective.

Well, as pointed out, you get one to collect and one to shoot, or, you can learn to reload and shoot mild loads with lead bullets that will never damage the barrel.

You are a mighty tough dude if you can take 400 rounds through a M91/30 in an afternoon. 100 rounds max and I am done for the day (with a big purple bruise to show for).

By my estimate, I have shot over 4,000 rounds through the 1938 Izhvesk M91/30 that I picked up at Big 5 many years ago. Barrel still looks sharp and shiny. These old battle rifles were built to take a LOT of abuse. As long as you protect it against corrosion, the rifle should easily last another 60 years.

If you shoot mosin nagants, be sure to bring a rubber mallet with you to the range.

When you get older, everything you had as a kid is collectible. I've usually just enjoyed whatever I have. I have a really old .44 Derringer I go shooting all the time. Maybe someone knows what it is. It has hand-scratched in it "J.W. Booth". Whatever it is, it's a fun little gun

                        Oh, you flatter me

I shoot from the standing position, so most of the recoil is dissapated. And 400 rounds is usually a heavy day of shooting. Mostly I shoot 100 rounds on a weekend and go home.

                        4,000 through a Mosin, though? That's impressive.

When I was younger I bought a single action colt 45 from my neighbor with ivory grips on it. It was sooo pretty, I never wanted to shoot it. I was so worried that I would do something to it I ended up selling it back to him.

                          So I understand your feeling.
