    Dilemma: To become a collector?

Guys, I'm starting to get a little worried.

For years, all I cared about when I got my hands on a new military surplus rifle was to run to the range, cram some ammo into it, and blast, blast, blast!

But now that I'm a little older and am more knowledgeable about the history of these guns...I find myself..not wanting to shoot them.

    How crazy is that?!!?

I mean, I know some of these milsurps are $50-100, but the more I know about them the less I want to shoot them. I mean some of the guns I own are older than my grandfather. I like to burn up lots of ammo and it just doesn't feel right burning the barrel on a rifle that will never be made again.

For example, that 1929 Ex-Dragoon I got a few weeks ago. I haven't shot it yet! I know it was only $99, but the history of it seems too important (to me) to take it out and put 400 rounds through it in an afternoon. The barrel is in such great condition and the muzzle is extremely tight. It could be that it was seldom fired since being rebuilt. How could I tear up a rifle like that?

Yeah I know they're built like tanks, but eventually the rifle will be shell of it's former self with the volume of fire I intend to put through it in a year (5000 or more).

I think I'm going to be very VERY selective about how often I shoot my military surplus guns from now on. I'll only shoot, in high volumes, modern production rifles that can be easily replaced (such as the AR15).

This way, I can be proud of the guns that I own and shoot them every once in a while. But never wear them out.

I do like iron sighted bolt actions though. I'm thinking of buying a Remington 700 BDL with iron sights to fill my desire for one. But I was hoping if anyone else had any other recommendations for a similar rifle? I don't really care what it is, it just needs to be 1) modern production 2) iron sights. Anybody have any suggestions?

No no no no no no! No!

You've got it all backwards. Those wonderful surplus rifles you speak of, the one's with almost legendary histories (especially the one's at $50-$100), you need two, yes two of each. One for preservation and for for blasting away those 5000 cartridges a year. It's simple really, buy more, then send me some too, then we can be friends!

See you knew there was a reason you post on Calguns!

One for show and one to go!

I know I heard that here before

Acually, I was thinking about buying a second Mosin. But I'm afraid that...how do I put this...I'll fall in love with it too

That was my intention with the first Mosin actually. "It's just a cheap $99 commie rifle. Who cares?" I thought. But once I held it in my hands and felt how real the history was, I couldn't do it.

Yes yes.... I also love my Mosin. But if you put your ear to the reciever, you'll hear something that might change you mind: "Comrade, let me bark jest vonce more." so I oblige, just as I did this afternoon, at 100, 200 and 500 yards. and it was all beautiful, my Mosin had fun too.

BTW was able to hit my mark almost every shot at 500, these weapons are truly impressive.

Just get a few while they're cheap, keep the best ones, and blast the hell out of the rest. Don't abuse them, and they'll last for another 100 years.

If you aren't going to enjoy yours leave them to me. I don't have enough yet.

                    I'm leaning towards this route.

Anybody here ever fire more than 10,000 out of a single Mosin before? How does it hold up?

On the contrary. I DO enjoy them, that's why I don't want to burn them out.

What you need is a C&R license and mail to to all these guys, you will beat gun store and on-line buys.

                              Nothing wrong with that.

I have a 1911 I got from my father that dates about to 1917. Very nice original USGI issue. Probably worth a lot. It shoots ball only and does not like modern ammo. I shoot it rarely, as I think I want to preserve it.

I have some other pre-1900 handguns that I never shoot. Some are in pristine condition, but still I don't shoot them. They are worth too much for that.

On the other hand, I have an M1, M1 Carbine, and other more modern milsurp stuff that I shoot often.

There is nothing wrong with having both collector stuff you'd rather not fire and other guns you fire regularly. There is more than one way to enjoy a gun.
