    Picked up my Mosin M44!

Hi, everybody. You're probably tired of hearing about my M44 but I picked it up today and it's really nice. A 1944 Izzy that was refurbished judging by serial numbers that were stamped over and the same number as on the bolt placed next to them.

    Lousy cell pic attached.

It looks clean of cosmoline but instead it has what resembles motor oil on the parts including the bayonet (by the way, the cleaning rod is missing--may contact SOG for that or just get a replacement). I'll have my gunsmith clean it up and check the headspace, etc., and I may have some polishing on the interrupter done so strippers feed better but I'm really impressed with the gun and glad I decided to get "just one more" hahaha

Congratulations!! An M44 was my first firearms purchase ever. I bought one the day I turned 18. Enjoy the fireballs

Mosin stripper clips don't feed well inherently due to the rimmed cartridge. I have original WW2 stripper clips and they feed better than the repros which are junk. My Enfields feed marginally better than the Mosin on strippers, but it is no Mauser or 1903. Avoid polishing to solve a problem that doesn't exist.

Awesome - not go out and shoot it!

No need to spend money on a gunsmith. Tear it down yourself and inspect the parts, it's the best way to get to know your "new" rifle.

This^^^^. If you still feel it's necessary, I'll do for you for whatever the 'smith is going to charge you.
They feed fine from strippers. The secret is to lift up on the pointy end of the top round as you push the rounds into the magazine. Polishing the interrupter won't help it feed any easier. You need to learn the mechanics of the system.
Nice rifle, by the way. Welcome to the addiction.

                    Congratulations!!!

Oh M44 is just so much for so little $ - I'd recommend taking her down for a good scrub; consider yourself a conscript now.

The Molot imported Mosins I have owned and seen had a thin layer of oil on the parts that was definitely not cosmolene. The standard boiler plate language with C&R's is to have them inspected by a gunsmith, but I never do personally unless something is obviously wrong.

Unless they guaranteed a cleaning rod would be present, just go buy one for $20 or less. As mentioned above, tear the rifle down yourself and get to know all the parts. Mosins are very simple mechanically and easy to maintain. The only thing that is a little tricky is just making sure the firing pin protrusion is correct, which the Mosin tool is useful for.

                        congrats

we totally understand how you feel about your first M 44. My first was a 1955 Romanian M 44 . it has fantastic metal and beater wood. after shooting a M 44 it is hard to go back to 91-30s.

I only have one 91/30, a laminate Tula while I have five M44s, of all different flavors, if that tells you something? The M44 is a great rifle, fun as heck to shoot. My only regret is that I never jumped on an M38, same thing sans the bayonet. The M44 is front heavy because of it so for pure off hand shooting, the M38 is a little better.
