    CMP SG Garand Update

I became concerned when I saw folks posting on the CMP boards boasting 4-6 week turnarounds. I have a SG order in the queue since September. I violated the cardinal rule and replied to my DBU email. Hiss Booo.......

Not 2 hours later, a nice lady with a charmingly twangy southern drawl called me. She explained politely that none of those people are getting SG's in those time frames. She said that although SG's are "sold out", they are assembling rifles and filling them by date received. She said my September order is good to go and will be coming in a couple weeks.

I would have been delighted with an email reply, and didn't expect any reply. So I am just passing on the update for those of you in the same boat, and offering yet more fawning praise of the CMP, which the netz are already chock full of.

I could not think of anything more festive. And what a great eco-friendly target a big pumpkin would make for a well placed HXP round.

You dont have to worry, Garands have not been shipped with the comercial pumpkin orange stocks for some time. They use commercial walnut stocks

CMP is scraping the bottom of the barrel, they are now assembling rifles. Field Grades are being assembled from pitted grade C receivers. The Fat Lady is warming up unless any more rifles are returned to the Army

My September order of two SG's took about 3 weeks to arrive. They were both nice GI samples. My SG from earlier this year was basically a special grade with new barrel, stock, and pristine metal. I'm super happy with CMP.

I think the only hope now is for foreign returns. The Army is hanging on to a bunch of M1 rifles for ceremonial use for the services.

There were a lot of MAP rifles moved overseas over the decades which technically should have come back to the U.S. when the users were finished with them. A lot were destroyed, moved on to lower tier countries or even sold on the European civilian market. I saw deactivated M1 rifles for sale in Germany in the late 70s that I presume were former Bundeswehr rifles. I wonder how many are still out there with countries that will actually send them back to us as Greece and Denmark did? I doubt we'll see Iran, Ethiopia, and Jordan send them back for example

I was just at the CMP for the Advanced Maintenance Class Oct 21-23. They told the class that they were about 1 year away from running out of Garands and HXP ammo. We were told explicitly that if we wanted HXP, to "limit out" (10 cases) this year or be left holding the bag.

And yes, they are getting towards the bottom of the barrel and assembling the rifles you're getting. In fact, we were told that the receivers we had to pick from for our class (we were building Special Grades) would've been culls just a few years ago (a pic of my receiver below).

ETA: They also said that there's a critical shortage of in-spec gas cylinders. We were told that unless the gas cylinders we were provided we're out-and-out defective, there would be no swapping of that part for another for purely cosmetic reasons, or because you were looking for a particular manufacturer.

by "cases" of HXP were they referring to the loose packed 200 round cans? (that is all I've seen on the estore for a while now)

Or are there more spam cans/clipped cans on the horizon?

Yes, the loose pack. They said there is no more surplus Garand ammo, beyond what they've got in the warehouse.

They showed us on the warehouse tour the spam cans full of linked/clipped HXP. A lot of the rounds are corroded and unserviceable. So they manually go through the lots and fill used ammo cans with 200 rounds of the HXP that's in decent shape.

IFAIK, there's a limit of ten, 200-round "cases" per person, per year now (total of 2,000 rounds).

Bottom line: If you like HXP, get it while the getting's good.

The rifle overall is in very good condition. The barrel shows some finish wear but everything looks freshly parkerized. The stock is new wood with the CMP cartouche. Strong curb appeal, but more of a shooter grade Garand than other ones I own. Pretty low serial number. MW 2+ / TE 3+ I will post a range report as soon as I get around to shooting it.
