    M1 Feeding

Hello fellow C&R Calgunners I have an M1 Garand that always when I get out to the range does not cycle 100%, I know this is because it is "dry" and M1's like to run wet but I want something that will keep it running 100% of the time it seems like I am applying Rem Oil after every 8 shots is there any better lubricants for the M1? I am doing something wrong? should I apply Grease if so where?

Then go onto YouTube and check out Brownell's short video clip on proper lubrication of the M1 Garand. It's part of a series that they have for M1 Garands, M1As, and Mini-14s.

A Tutorial on how to apply grease to your M1 Garand Rifle. Grease is critical for proper function of the rifle and we'll walk you through the process.

As an added bonus, that is what you should be using on that M1A too.

Don't overdo it though. As a once upon a time new Garand owner, I went heavy on the Lubriplate and the first round fired resulted in Lubriplate being flung right back into my face.

The M1 shouldn't be run wet like an AR.
Please elaborate on the nature of the malfunction.

Are you using new clips? I have found new clips to be too tight much of the time and they need to be stretched.

              Grease not oil....as mentioned

Load clips so that the first round to come out is on the right side of the clip.

              Stretch/spread new clips as mentioned.

OP, you need to clarify what "does not cycle 100%" means.

Grease if it slides, oil if it rotates. Moly wheel bearing grease works great, and is all I use.

I doubt your problem is lubrication. I use an insanely light coat of Froglube on mine and it runs 100% with PPC M2 ball clone ammo. Is that a CMP gun? What grade? Did you change any springs or anything? What specifically happens when it malfunctions?

Make sure your gas plug isn't loose.

Use Mobil 1 synthetic grease. Testing has shown it's just as good, if not better than lubriplate, and locally available.

And yeah, if it was a surplus gun you should replace all your springs as well.

You may be prematurely wearing your oprod this way. Just be careful.

+1 for Mobil Synthetic grease. Works great and is readily available at any auto parts store. I use it on many of my guns, it makes the actions feel even smoother.

The rule of thumb for lubrication on an M1 is if you can see it, you used too much.

I would replace the op rod spring with a new one from Garand Gear or Orion 7. That and the proper lube should fix your problem.
