    Mauser extraction issue

    Hi,

I'm relatively new to firearms and just got a yugoslavian m24/47 mauser. I shot it a couple times with no problems until it jammed and I couldn't pull the bolt open with a spent case in the chamber and I had to force it open. Now it won't extract properly so I bought a new extractor but it still didn't extract. It doesn't look right from the pictures I've seen of others but I don't have the experience to tell. One of the attached pictures is the old extractor and the second one is the new one I bought. Can anyone tell me if I bought a bad extractor or do I have deeper problems?

    Thanks

The tip of the extractor should reach past the raised lip of the bolt face or it won't catch the rim on the cartridge. In the 2nd picture, it looks like the extractor tip has been broken off.

Make sure the extractor is fully seated on the collar ring. I might be riding just a little to high resulting in insufficient contact with the cartridge lip.

Google "Mauser bolt face" images and look at the ones with the extractors.

Will any mauser claw extractor fit or is it model specific?

No, they are different lengths and the tips are also different lengths.

Numrich sells them by model if you find that it's seated properly and doesn't look like it should:

Yugo Mausers are "Safety Breeched". Unlike other 98 Mauser designs. Having 2 broke extractors in a few rounds sound like more Koinkydink than is acceptable.

The safety breeched barrel stub on the Yugo requires an "extractor cut" in the right side of the barrel stub to clear the extractor. If not done properly the extractor conflicts with the barrel.

With no ammo, does the bolt operate smoothly, and close completely without undue force required?

                      Is this a sporter rifle?
Does the reciever number match the barrel number?
                      Has it been rebarreled?

Yeah, I'm an answer a question, with a question, kinda guy. Until full disclosure of relevant info is found to properly figure out a problem.

That's where I bought the second extractor and I guess they gave me a broken one.

                          Pacrat,

For the full story, only the first extractor broke during operation. The second one is one I ordered online at gunpartscorp. I think it broke because when I took it shooting the first time, I was really new and relied on my friend who sprayed the insides with gun cleaner. He thought I shouldn't fire it dry and so he applied very liberal use of a off the shelf spray cleander. Then it jammed and we had to force it open. The bolt operates fine with no ammo in it. I have no idea if it is a sporter rifle and no idea if it has been rebarreled but the shop I got it from didn't have any indication of either.

                          Thanks

How are you feeding the ammo to your rifle. Single loading from open ejection port? Or filling magazine and feeding from there.

If you look at your bolt face. It is recessed, but has a case head size slot in the bottom, and the extractor lip that is broken off, is supposed to engage the cartridge rim on the right side of the face. Holding the round against the bolt face. From magazine, into chamber, and continues to hold it during firing and extraction, until the bolt is retracted far enough to hit the ejector. Which is located in the little box on the left rear side of receiver.

Unless modified by a competent smith who understands the Mauser Controlled Magazine Feed System. Simply dropping a round onto the top of the magazine, or into the chamber, and forcing the bolt closed to make the extractor "snap" over the cartridge rim. That has been known to break many extractors.

The Mauser Controlled Feed System. Is designed to specifically feed rounds ONLY from the charged magazine. The follower pushes the round upward, and slides the case rim UNDER the extractor during feeding from mag to chamber.

Did you feed ammo exactly as shown in this video?

What brand of ammo are you using? Is it this stuff from Sportsman's guide?
