    FN49

Hey guys I am about to purchase an FN49 in my area for 700 in 8mm Mauser and I do want to shoot it a good amount. I love semi auto Milsurps and want to make sure this is a good buy. I have a lot of 196gr Wolf gold 8Mm and was wondering if that's good for it. Thanks

Thats probably too much... But it all depends upon condition. Without detailed photos it's impossible to offer any good advice about price, and value. Many of the Egyptian 8mm rifles are rebuilds done by Century. Many have reproduction stocks.

    Rebuild above, original below.

I've got several FN 49's, including a couple in 8mm. I've also got several Hakims.

Personally, I've found my Hakims to be more accurate.

I would just say don't use Turkish surplus.

196 is on the heavy side but action can handle it.

Check recoil Springs for proper assy and damage (kinks, breaks, collapse). Reassasemble and lube.

Make sure you understand use of adjustable gas system, before shooting remove handguard and close it down at least three-four notches and observe action cycling and ejection upon firing single rounds only, open up until ejection is consistent.

If original stock check for small cracks around action screws, repair before they get larger.

If replacement stock you can bed recoil and action screws areas if action is loose in stock.

I would strongly suggest you look into the slam fire potential of these. Check out the different firing pin styles and FP safety as used on the 30-06. If you reload use mil-spec primers.

I believe you want the two piece firing pin.

Also, check and see that all the serial numbers are matching. IF they match. it's not a rebuilt gun.

Not true. I have had a few Century rebuilds which were all matching.

If it's all matching (factory numbers) is it still a rebuild? Or just a replacement stock / refinish?

Century bought all the remaining FN-49 rifles and replacement parts from the Egyptians in the 80's. They received rifles in all different grades. They sold some, just as they received them.

Some had original finish and original stocks... Some were refinished and received new made Century stocks. Some had original brass butt plates, and later they had black plastic butt plates.

Some were actually assembled from new FN made spare receivers and parts...These specific rifles are interesting because these rifles have a different receiver crest than the original Belgian FN made rifles which had the crown crest.

These spare receivers had the "Eagle of Saladin" crest. All of these rifles had the century new made birch stocks with the dark stain finish. Another difference was the new "eagle" receivers were of the later type, which were cut for the stock cross bolt, allowing original stocks made for the Belgian 30-06 variant to be used...

The rifle below, is one those....It has an original Belgian stock and hand guards, as well as the Belgian army variant butt plate.

So to better answer your question, If one of these Egyptian FN-49 rifles had it's stock replaced by Century, and or had a refinish. They would be considered as being "rebuilt".

Another pic, of a century replacement stock and hand guard (top) and an original Belgian made stock.

Thanks for the info- I'll have to take a look at mine. It doesn't look like a refinish, but the stock may be a replacement (not sure if Century or a previous owner). Buttplate is brass.

I have a nice refinish with extra barrel, bolt and a bunch of extra parts for $700 if interested.

                            That being said... *Ahem*

SVT and any of you others care to sell me your spare FN49 in 30-06 or Argy in .308?

I have an itch to burn holes in my bank account. It's my graduation present to myself plus my FAL is getting lonely.

I bought a Columbian in 3006 from him years ago.

Re: too hot ammo. Can't you just shut off the gas and shoot it like a straight pull? Assuming it isn't so hot that the chamber will blow up.
