I have a sporterized 1989 rifle made in 1903. It has a dark bore but shoots 3" groups at 100 yards using a Lyman 314299 200 grain cast bullet with a gas check sized to .313" over 17.5 grains of Alliant 2400. Slickest and most fun rifle that I have.

I have an 1898 rifle with the same cartouche date. They are quite fun to shoot, very mild on the recoil and if the bore is good, quite accurate. There is a dizzying array of rear sights that came on them and I am glad to say that the one on your rifle is correct for a '98 produced in 1901. I also recently picked up a rifle cut down into a carbine at a local yard sale.

You can fix the crack! The surplusrifle forum has a great repair thread.

I opened the magazine door on a Krag once and remember thinking to myself, "Boy, this rifle looks like it probably wasn't that easy to machine!"

Phungn that crack is an easy fix but the stock needs to be bedded or relieved, or both.

The crack is no longer a crack.

At least everything else looks really good. Doesnt look like it's been touched for a long time.

The wood would have been beautiful without that crack.

As horrible as it looks, that crack can be repaired so it is almost invisible.

Ouch! Did that happen during shipping or did it take a tumble? Like highpower said, you can repair it and it will be almost invisible if you do it right. Use Acraglass instead of glue for a stronger hold. PM Gunny aka Candyman, he has done some amazing stock repairs and can walk you through how to do it. Trap55 is also a good resource but he hasn't had a lot of time lately to be on the boards much. Never hurts to ask though.

Happened during shipping. Gonna make a claim and see what they say. I'm not shy about making repairs it just sucks to wait for claims. Hopefully it'll turn out ok. I put out a wtb on Reddit and have 100pc of brass coming. I really wanted to bring it to the shoot next week since I don't see them often.

The more I look at it the more I just want to fix it now. The screws looks perfect. There is stuff caked into all the nooks so it doesn't look like the barrel bands have ever come off. That's too bad I'll have to do it to repair the stock. Some nicer replacement stocks have cost almost as much or more than the whole rifle on ebay.

Thats a nice clean break so it should be fixable. Hopefully you saved all the little pieces that splintered off.

We fixed James' stock with some of that weird red stuff (remember when his BP Mauser blew the stock up!), can't remember the name offhand. Trick with that stuff was to keep the bond thin, it's not strong if the pieces have too much gap. I made creative use of some clamps and rubber bands- seems to be holding up so far.

Yours is broken so completely you could probably make do with epoxy. The benefit of the red stuff was it can flow into cracks epoxy won't reach.
