I'd go with a mauser if you can find a nice 7x57 or Sweede 6.5x55 if you can find one. If you reload, you"ll be pleased. -g
I've shot thousands of 308 rounds in my one of my beater isahapore 2A's with no adverse effects! If ever time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin.

Mauser for sure...but I am biased I love them...I am thinkning about selling my Kriegs model 39/42 but it would be out of your $200 budget. Maybe you should wait till you have more money and get what you want? If your not in a hurry to buy check classic arms. They have alot of nice RC that are within the 200-300 range. They arent offering anymore until Feb, but IMHO its worth the wait if you want a K98K or otherwise. I have been more than happy with all of the ones I have picked up from them. Cheers!

well if u can't make up your mind still, then the obvious choice is a bunch of Mosins for $200

My buddy and I recently went shooting and he shot corrosive yugo ammo through his Mosin and figured he could just piss in the barrel and call it a day. Several days later the bolt was rusted shut but I guess the fouling wasnt TOO bad.Comment

Get either. They are both very fine rifles in their own merit. I will say that if you are going to get a Mauser, get the real deal and find a nice K98.sigpic

Enfield - anything else is just a rifle. Course I'm biased being British an all. The problem with Enfields is that there is too much history and you never end up with just one. Get a No4., then you need a No.1, then you need a sniper version, then a USA made version from WW2 , then canadian, then one from each British factory, then the 7.62 models, etc etc etc - it's a slippery slope.Comment

You think a Mouser is better looking than a Lee Enfield?. Surely you're joking?? Either the streamlined No.4 or the Bulldog looking flat fronted No.1 are better looking for dofferent reasons. We could of course go on all day. but hell it beats work.Comment

Hmmm.
If you must have an Enfield I'd get an Ishapore Enfield for the following reasons:
1. Modern caliber 7.62 X 51, available.
2. Generally nice barrels...not fired all that much...
3. The other Enfields might have too much history. You never know where its been.. headspace issues, expansive chambers. So so Ishapore 2A and 2A1s can be had for $175.. pretty nice looking ones for $275.
I'd look at a Finnish M39. You could get a nice one of either for around $300 thru wholessale guns and ammo.
Save a little more...your almost there. The M39s are quite nice with a fine reputation. Surplus ammunition is pretty much as cheap as you can find and you can always reload later (as with the Ishapore) when you can afford the equipment.
I have both and love them. I can't speak for a Mauser.
Let us know what you decide and get.Comment

Is there anyone that makes replacement barrels for the enfield or anywhere where I can buy a new barrel NOS?Comment

Um.. yes. The No4's are decent looking, and the No5's are cool (I have both), but any other Enfield is butt ugly IMO. I'd take a Mauser for looks any day.Comment
