Rust and Storage Question

Hey all,


Could anyone recommend a good processes for cleaning off surface rust? It looks like the moist Santa Barbara air got to my guns. For example, on my SKS there are some rust in the bolt carrier handle and in the hinge of the magazine. I have not checked out the Mosin yet, but I fear it is the same.

I want to make sure this never happens again, especially because after saving up for a while I was just able to order a CMP M1 Garand. Can any one recommended a good storage option that is not a safe. As a student I have to move every year or two so a safe is not an option sadly. I was thinking maybe a rubbermaid with moisture absorbers inside. Currently I try to oil my guns every few months and store them in a soft case.

I use Ballistol and fine steel wool when dealing with surface rust. I then spay the barrel and bore again and leave it,

Kroil and fine bronze wool will remove surface rust without harming the finish.

There are several rust preventatives that are effective. Ballistol mentioned above is good. I use Eezox.

Storing guns in a soft case is how guns rust. Cases are for transport, not storage. I recommend a safe with a box of dehumidifier crystals.

I have 36 Garands that spend most of their time in "storage",,,,,,,the best rust prohibitive that I have found is the formula called "Ed's Red" WITH the anhydrous lanoline added. Skip the acetone, but include the lanoline and you have a moisture barrier, gun oil that will repel moisture and the resultant rust that follows.....

This^^^^EXACTLY. Storing firearms in soft cases is just asking for trouble. Or rust, as you've discovered.

You could also vacuum pack them. No oxygen, no rust. Most food storage systems have make your own bag rolls, you just make a long one. If you make it extra long, you can re use it a couple times. Throw in a silica pack and some iron ahavings for extra protection.

If you don't have the safe you can for a low cost get those silicon impregnated gun socks.

After you neutralize it with the Kroil/ Bronze wool method, wipe the entire gun down with a thin coat of Renaissance Wax.

Try a moisture remover, I have a couple in several safes and storage boxes. They are called desiccants. You can also put them in soft cases and pelican style cases.
