I got my M48 at Big 5 when they first got them in, unissued with the whole kit for $179. Then I got some Turkish 7.9 online for 900 rounds delivered at $60, I guess those were the days.

M48s are cool guns, I dig mine, although I don't shoot it that often. And no, that's not Bubba'd varnish, that is just some Henry's Feed 'N Wax on the stock that gives it those highlights.

I got one from Big 5 last year when they first got them in. Not sure what the current batch looks like but the ones I saw at big 5 over the last few months are definitely comparable to the lower $279 grade at AIM

Still cheaper at big 5 factoring shipping, tax and transfer but Big 5 doesn't seem to have the higher grades like AIM does

The M48 is a sturdily built and fun to shoot rifle. A mandatory part of any Mauser collection. My M48's are the two bottom rifles.

I paid 249(maybe 199? I'm hazy) about 3 years ago at big 5, the wood was quite damaged by time and cosmo but what the hell did I know, the metal looked great and I knew it was the one I wanted as far as being a M48 not an A or B model so I went for it. Thing's like frankenmauser, started out purple... went to a red tinted brown after the first cleaning and then ended up a nice chocolate after emergency life saving surgery.

You should never drill and tap a historic rifle. If you want to put a scope on something, buy a Remington 700 or another bolt action rifle. You can even find modern bolt action rifles in 8mm that you can mount a scope on. Just please don't permanently modify old guns

Just got around to cleaning the old cosmo during new years weekend and have not shot it yet.

Priorities man! Just buy a stripped lower now and get the rest of the parts later. The M48s won't be around for too long but the AR parts are always easily available.
