    Syrian Mauser

I glommed a Syrian Mauser at an online estate sale recently. There were only a few pictures and a slim description...but nobody was interested so I got it dirt cheap.

    Better pics when it arrives

    Description advised

SYRIAN MODEL M.48 BOLT ACTION MAUSER RIFLE, 8mm Mauser caliber, 23 1/4" barrel, blued finish, hardwood military stock and hand guard, adjustable rear sight, bayonet lug, metal butt plate, import marked "K98 YUGO 8MM", Syrian crest, serial #V48977

No bore description even? That would make it risky for me. How cheap is dirt?

Is it matching numbers? I'm a little confused by the description, is it Syrian or a Yugo capture, or both?

It looks like a worn out M48. Is there a picture of the crest available? How is the bore?

Not poo-pooing your purchase at all. I hope it is a jewel.

Syrian and Iraqi Mausers were frequently M48 and M48A rifles with appropriate crests stamped on the receiver. I've got an Iraqi Mauser that is an M48 with the Iraqi Hashimite crest

My thoughts exactly. At $105, it would have to be really worn to be a bad deal.

I've rarely seen a "worn out" Mauser. Is there something in the pictures or description that leads you to believe it is "worn out"?

No auction pictures of the crest...I'll post better pics when it arrives.

No bore condition in the description.

Interesting, I learned something new. Its hard to go wrong for $105, that's a steal.

OP, just curious but where did you find something like this at an online estate sale? I'm always looking for new and interesting ways to spend my money

I would have jumped on it for $105.00. These days that is cheapo cheap dirt...

Whoa...put the claws away friend. No one likes old Mausers more than me. Perhaps worn out was not the right word. "Well used?" And my original assertion was based on the obvious wear and patina to the stock and bluing.

Of course, that was also posted before I saw what you paid, which makes any complete and functioning firearm a bargain at that price, so relax.

I have seen worn out Mausers, and even owned a few, briefly. I have encountered specimens with worn out bores, badly corroded bores, broken bolt pieces, and significant corrosion hidden beneath the stock. Conscript soldiers that fielded these things were not always concerned with maintaining them for posterity and future ownership by Calguns members who hadn't been born yet.

I have learned the hard way that firearms bought sight unseen online can be money pits. Sometimes they can be jewels.

Congrats on your purchase, I hope it turns out great. A Syrian crested Mauser is certainly an uncommon rifle.

P.S. Dial down the sensitivity a bit.

                            No claws out here, Bobby.

You described the rifle as looking "worn out" and I wondered what you were seeing that I was missing.

Maybe you are being a little over-sensitive.

                              Thanks, '47

I'm hoping I can get some info from a member on the history of the Syrian Mausers. The Yugoslavians sold a lot of unmarked M48's to various countries, but I don't know much more about them than that.
