Anyone use their M1 Garand for NRA High power?

Thinking of giving it a try.
'inexperienced' doesn't begin to describe me, though.
    >never shot at 200 yards
    >never shot off hand, kneeling, prone

I probably have <200 rounds through my garands combined.

That said, any garand-specific thoughts/things I should watch out for?

garand thumb? garands have been used for high power for as long as there has been high power.. you may need to get some 2 round or 5 round clips before you start.

Way back when I first started shooting highpower matches I used my Garand. Nothing wrong with it at all. You won't be competitive, but having never done it before, you wouldn't be in the running anyway. You should practice going from standing to sitting/kneeling and prone in your home before you go out.

Load two and then eight in the rapid fire stages.

Also remember that 60 or 70 seconds is longer than you think, so don't be temped to rush your shots. Offhand is the hardest position to master, so practice aiming at a small mark on your wall and pulling the trigger when you are lined up. And for the myriad of net nannys out there, of course you want to have your rifle unloaded.

One of the reasons I continue to ridicule those that only sit on their butt and shoot from the bench is that it really doesn't really teach you any real useful skills in rifle shooting. If you make it a habit of competing in the matches, you will become a far better rifleman than those that can't shoot unless they are planted on their backside.

If you don't load ur own ammo-try to get some of the Danish Garand ammo or the Greek HXP.

The Danish is the most consistent, but the hxp is a close second.

Look for a local CMP affiliated club that shoots the Garand Springfield Matches. It will whet your appetite for full course Highpower, and give you some new acquaintances that are pretty close to you in skill and equipment.

I've got an accurized Garand and shot my local XTC matches for 2 years with it. Now I shoot an AR, and save the Garand for the GSM matches in the Unlimited Class.

            Great Fun!

Highpower will turn you into a"Rifleman" better than anything out there.I started with the M1,learned the fundamentals, then went on to M14.If a solid position can be built with the 30cal gas guns then the transition to an AR is a piece of cake.

                    I could be wrong
Only 8 round and 2 round allowed. Buy 2 round sleds or you're gonna have to load 2 single rounds in a 8 round clip. That.....can be tricky. If im wrong about the no no with 5 round clips my feelings wont be hurt

But Its good to do and please I hope I dont hear from the AR guys talking about how accurate the AR vs the Garand is. Going to a reloading clinic can cut down on the cost of going to too many matches
You'll never believe how heavy your Garand will get

Service rifle rules allow for the use of 5rd clips at shooters discretion.

I shot my first 2 XTC matches with my M1 Garand. It was definitely a learning experience and got my feet wet. At 200 and 300 yards I did fine but 600 was a challenge. I could get shots on target at 600 but with no groups or consistency at all. I switched over to a AR and would not shoot an M1 in HP unless I was just shooting foe fun and not until I go distinguished.

Shoot what you have and get you4 feet wet. BTW I have never seen a shooter in CMP or NRA matches shoot in the kneeling position. You can certainly shoot that position if you wanted but most shoot sitting instead.

Do you have a 1907 sling? Lots of videos online showing how to use one in competition.

Quick YouTube search comes up with this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaRCFpH27-w.

He has the keepers set up wrong .They should be together to hold the lower loop tighter when in the sling.
