    Nope to the jacket. I wonder if anyone makes one for tall folks.
    Probably: http://www.creedmoorsports.com/produ...Shooting-Coats

    I wouldn't buy a shooting jacket unless you think you are going to stick with it.

    An option, find an old sweatshirt, and sew/hot glue some rubber padding in the shoulder pocket. While you are at it, put a bit on the upper arm where the sling will sit so it doesn't slide.

      A match here every month...two loaner Garands, two AR loaners and two loaner Match rifles available as well...

      TURNING and turning in the widening gyre
      The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
      Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
      Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
      The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
      The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
      The best lack all conviction, while the worst
      Are full of passionate intensity.

Also you need to get the sling really tight which the jacket helps allow a bit more comfortably. And the elbow pad for your left arm on the ground helps with recoil/carpet burn from an M1 too. I have a small bore coat and a HP coat that "I don't leave home without". You recognize this guy showing a Creedmoor coat?

        Meh on the hardback.

        A Creedmoor canvas/duck cloth coat with elbow and shoulder pads will do the trick for newbs.

        If I were to re-do my Creedmoor coat, I'll just get the standard HP coat with a full canvas back since the side vents don't work.

        A full canvas back and shoulder straps are needed for offhand. I have an old Freeland coat with that double canvas back - now that is stiffer that the hardback.

        No need for gunny approval

            I watched some more videos and spent a bunch more time on the floor.

            Still no luck with prone. If I actually get it into the shoulder pocket the top of the butt is in the pocket and the bottom is connected to nothing. And the gun is so low I can't really get a sight picture there.

            My thoracic spine is pretty stiff and I suspect that's the problem.

            If I move it up that is on the collarbone and I can almost get a sight picture but I can only aim it a bit down the ground. You know aside from being on the collarbone being a problem.

              Get over to say Valley this weekend and watch/try the 200,300,385, 500 meter silhouette military rifle shoot, Sunday they are having an 300,500,600,800 prone match .

              There is a lot you can learn for XTC shooting.

                That's high on my list, I just need to get some soft point projectiles loaded.

                  2meterb, re: sight picture in prone. I don't know about high power rules etc but I think you should be trying to raise/lower your cheek weld with something. e.g. foam and tape or a butt stock cheek rest thingy.

                  Here's a visual from luckygunner.com

                  How to Make an Improvised Rifle Cheek Rest

                  When I did Appleseed, the instructors did the above exactly to help raise the comb height. Otherwise when I "go to sleep" my sight picture was non existent. They had foam pipe and I shaved it down to adjust to my needed size.

                  Here's a cheapy cheek rest http://www.opticsplanet.com/fox-outd...est-rifle.html

                  Good luck.

                    That would def. help. I have more of a tooth-weld than a cheekweld

                      Do a dead hang from a pullup bar since that will stretch your neck/traps/upper back/shoulder joint.

                      A foam roller is a very good tool as well.

                      Lie on your back on the ground, arms over your head, lace your fingers and stretch.

                      I do a variation of the above after a long day at work, sitting on a chair is really bad for the entire back.

                        Try loosening that sling

                        On the collarbone is where I put my butt. As close to the neck as I can get it. Loosen the sling and the muzzle should rise. Right Thumb over the top of the pistol grip and right cheekbone against the thumb.

                        I've seen a well-respected Garand shooter who wears a mouthguard. He shoots XTC exclusively with a Garand. You don't want the heel of the receiver bouncing off a tooth!

                        Good stuff on prone here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UE8RDSyrJY I attended this clinic recently at the Creedmoor Cup West.

                            Sounds to me like a case of the sling being adjusted too tightly. Muzzle diving is a classic happening if the sling is too tight. Prone and sitting are going to be different settings. Mark the holes you're going to use with a sharpie so you'll know where to stick the claws.

                              The shoulder recoil pad really help me out in prone. I may wait on a jacket for a bit until I do with more but I'm definitely going to get a good range pad.

                              Got 189 which i think is okay since everything was new to me.

                              The garand was a bit of a pain in single-shot prone.
                              Not sure what happened but each shot I took on the 600 yard reduced target w/prone got worse and worse. My sighting shots were in 10 and X. & I kept shooting way too low even with the elevation crank to way the hell up.

                              Definitely going to do it again thanks for everyone's help

                                Im willing to bet that elbow position changed a little .Everything must be the same from shot to shot ,this will happen the more you shoot.
                                Keep it simple!
