Found a National Ordinance 1903a3, looked pretty good at the shop. Went home and looked it up, and never went back for a second look.

OK, I'm new to this CMP game, but I don't get why I occasionally see these comments. It annoys me greatly. The rifles are *not expensive*, the garands seem to be something 30% off of the open market value. What, did Obama promise everyone free government rifles with the rent money and I missed it? Is there now a groundswell of resentment because the entitlement isn't coming in, no doubt because "Bush left such a mess?" (1)

If it's too expensive, just go buy one on the free market and report back on how well you did for the same rifle.

Second--it's not an entitlement, people! The only excuse for the government taking my money to give you a great rifle at a deep discount is to *teach marksmanship*! That's more or less implementing the prefatory clause of the 2A, so I can live with that. But then I *want* the government to at least *try* to get them in the hands of shooters instead of profiteers or collectors who are just going to put them under glass. I wouldn't mind if the qualification was stricter, the way I gather it used to be--*I* don't think it's unreasonable to ask me to participate in a clinic, match, or whatever. In fact, I don't think the government is generally obliged to buy me a rifle, so I have no right to complain about whatever the standards are so long as it's fair and nondiscriminatory.

The second amendment does *not* give you the right to a free rifle bought with someone else's money! It gives you the right to buy one on the free market with your own money--everything else is unearned and unasked for privilege.

One of the great truths is that people never value freebies. These are *great* rifles. The only thing retarded here is the idea that somehow someone should be able to have the government steal my money for a program and then not even try to make it do what it is supposed to do.

I want to write a third rant about what this says about how some people value American history, but I'm not going to do it. If you think the government should give you free cookies and milk, I don't think it's going to be possible to make the point. What those rifles really cost were the lives of a lot of American boys who didn't live to grow up, just so you could live in a country where it's still possible to own a military rifle (sorta kinda) and complain that your handouts aren't good enough.

        Man, I'm crabby today.

        (1) I guess everyone's sanity and virtue has a price. "A rifle in every closet" is a campaign promise I could get behind--as long as all the other people are paying for it. :-) If we're going to bring down the Republic by voting each other spoils out of the public purse, at least let's do it for the spoils *I* want. :-)

What do you need guns for if you are going to send your children, seven hours a day, 180 days a year to government schools? What do you need the guns for at that point?-- R. C. Sproul, Jr. (unconfirmed)

Don't trip while getting off the soap box now...

Anyway my opinion in our beautiful country should not annoy you at all...

I just know what they use to be able to be bought for... Pretty cheap...

And Mine was stolen years ago so I am not into paying as much as they ask... Maybe someday I will want to... But for now I have a pretty nice house payment and it bums me out I can't get one for cheaper, That's all.

So I want them cheaper... I can post whatever I like btw (just like you)

No hard feelings though just want to let you know! Btw who said anything about a "FREE" rifle?

I see no reason why CMP shouldnt ask one to participate in a club or like me have prior military exp.
like 7x57 said CMP's rifles are generally less expensive than ones gotten elsewhere so why not have some requirements to get one. Join some group (I joined CalGuns) participate in a Club (mine was the Marines) and then you can get what you want plain and simple.
