And you coulda showed him the bill that DeLeon tried to get passed for serialaztion/registration but got tossed by Jerry Brown.

Even made public statements that it won't help gun crime.

I can't believe you entertained him. I would have just said "Okay, I'll do it tomorrow".

I guess that's not surprising in this day and age...

Yes, it would be a valid question for a featureless build, but I meant it in the context that CA gun laws are complex, and many people are not aware of even some of the most basic ones. CA makes it easy for the otherwise law abiding citizen to get into trouble.

Sorry to bring back a thread but does anyone have a link to an atf page that specifically says home builds do not require serial? I can't find it for my life. Everything I see says licensed manufacturers have to but cannot find where it says we don't. Also, I assume that depth of engraving only applies to a serial correct? Or does personal logos and fire control lettering have to meet that depth also? Thank you

The CGF wiki's FAQ section covers manufacture here.

But to address the more general question, you're looking at the issue backwards. We don't need to serialize most homebuilds prior to sale because no law states that we must (see this PDF, which Gene Hoffman posted in the thread NorCalXJ linked, specifically the fourth-to-last paragraph). The legal requirement that licensed manufacturers do so is specific to them.

Wow I just flipped through that sticky also. And missed the PDF. I guess I am pretty backwards since I haven't seen anything saying we must. I didn't even think of it that way. Thank you guys for the links and thoughts.

Laws tell us what is illegal, not what is legal. So if there is no law making something illegal, then it's legal by default.
