There is a guy (thingmeister) that makes a conversion piece to let it take unmodified 1911 mags though.

I have the 45 version (traded some ammo for it during the frenzy) and am ambivalent on it. No HP high caps for it and 1911 high caps are basically crap (relevant for when we leave Cali after retirement).

You might consider the new Chiappas M1 carbine in 9mm that takes Beretta 92F mags. It is more expensive then the HP though.
The way to go if you want to use 1911 mags is get a Marlin Camp Carbine.

Also what optics are recommended for the Hi-Point or should I just leave the irons?

thumb tucks under the ejection port just right. Not the same as stock, but feels fine. You always feel in control of the rifle.

I have an AR in 9mm, it's fun to shoot and way cheaper. I run dirty 9mm ammo thru my AR that I would not run they my handguns. Remanufactured ammo or Tula, no problem.

I had one in 9mm. Great shooter. You won't regret it.

[QUOTE=Anthracis;15344923]OP, what's the proposed use for the firearm? Home defense, critter control, punching paper targets? Also, what distance will you be shooting?

For close-in home defense, I'd recommend the .45

Paper punching for fun, to me, would dictate the 9 since its cheaper.

This is just my two cents on it. There are many alternatives and options to consider. People have written textbooks on less....

So what are you going to be doing with it?[/QUOTE

Mostly targets with ball ammo, defense with JHPs so upon further review it looks like I'll go with the 9mm

I have the .45 and love it. I ditched the irons and have a cheap red dot which hold zero and can hit 100 yards with no problem. I do have back up angled 45* irons with a foregrip and brass stacker muzzle brake. The sucker is heavy especially with the dual mag holder on the stock, but I like it and my wife can shot it with no problem. Get it and you will not regret it. BTW just get the stock mags too much work to modify 1911 mags. Also get two 3mmx3mm rare earth magnets epoxy them together and you have a custom bullet button...weeeeee!
