What's the point of the A2 pistol grip finger bump?

What's the point of the A2 pistol grip finger bump? I always bought aftermarket grips just to avoid having the A2 finger bump. Recently I started taking all of my old A2s and shaving the bump off and stippling them. I personally hate the bump and believe I'm not alone. I was just wondering if there was an advantage or point why they changed from the bumpless A1 grip...

It was supposed to make them easier to hold onto, but with varying hand sizes it doesn't work so well for some people.

I love'em! I actually use then when I can, like on my Magpul MIAD grip.

I don't like them when specifically focusing on them but I've never noticed them when using the rifle.

          Finger grooves increase retention.

The A2 grip was a request from USMC, stronger material...bump added to increase stability and aid in grip retention, less slippery.

User named "coldblue" on ar15.com posted some interesting info regarding this issue and others on the improvements leading to the M16A2, claims he was an officer involved in the program. I will find the link to post when I get to a real computer in the morning, darn mobile device.

It's there so you have a good excuse to buy a nice aftermarket grip.

I hate them. I have very large hands and long fingers.

I have a lot of power tools in the garage..... A couple minutes on a disc sander does wonders.....

Then I usually slap on some latex gloves, mix up some bondo... slap the bondo on the grip and lightly get my hand on it to shape the bondo. After several applications, I build up the palm swell to offset my hand to the right and rear of the little girly sized normal grip so my trigger finger placement is correct. Otherwise, I over grip the trigger by a mile, and have to contort my hand/fingers to get correct finger placement.

Most people that have shot my rifles with this, like how it feels... unless they're a lefty....

This is not a regular A2... but has the bondo treatment. You cant see just how large the palm swell is...

Other side... you get an idea how thick the grip is seeing the thumb shelf..... (same rifle... sporting some new glass) Yes bondo is strong enough for this little wimpy 556 recoil.... If you change your mind, it's easy to break it off with a hammer or something... but it will stand up to recoil.

they moved the pinkie bump up because it alone was useless for weapon retention

realize the army still uses bayonets

I have no problems with the A2 grip, works just fine. I guess im not grip sensitive. Then again I'm not trigger sensitive, grip angle sensitive, nor optics sensitive. I'm a shooter

I like the feel and look of it. Fits like a glove.

                              I prefer the A2 grip.
