    Building an "off-list" .308 AK?

I remember seeing at least one post mentioning this is possible.

If this is possible, please post what parts are required and where to get them.

I've also seen quite a few pics "CA Legal Self-Loading Rifles" that look like AK's. Sifting through all the AR threads hasn't resulted in much information on this either.

    Thanks.

If you want to build a big caliber rifle, Ohio Rapid Fire has m76 rifle kits but they ain't cheap. They are in 8mm... ORRRRR you can go the cheaper route and try to find a seller with VEPR's (that come in .308, .223 , 5.45x39 and 7.62x39) that is willing to sell you one without the pistol grip. Don't try saigas unless you have (this is my recommendation) a DOJ letter saying its ok and the DA's blessing (just to be sure.)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I am looking for a .308 specifically.... That is semi-automatic, and has a pistol grip.

Then I can reinstall the pistol grip after I get it, and pin the clip, right? What is saigas?

Has anyone found a seller that will do this yet? What about these people?

Goto gunco.net and look in their AK other caliber threads.

Anyone know where to buy a VEPR or VEPR parts, and have them shipped here to CA?

A good way to do it would be to send someone you know in another state the $$$ to purchase a VEPR outright, then have your friend cut the receiver into 3 pieces with a hacksaw and send you out the rest of the parts.

*OR* let your friend keep the receiver since its his anyway and you get the rest of the parts... I'm thinking of doing this to build a SAIGA type AK in .223.

                      I hope you're kidding...right...

Veprs are non listed and a 308 Vepr minus the stock (thumbhole) is completely legal in CA. Have the stock mailed seperately then fill up the thumbhole so it's now a regular stock and you should be okay to put it back on the rifle.

Yes, but where to order it from? If someone has an out of state friend who would buy it, then ship it to me in 2 seperate pieces, (for a fee), I would do that.

I don't see why it would be necessary to take a hack saw to it, though. Why not just remove the stock (if the pistol grip is attatched) and send it seperately?

There are at least two out of state FFLs that are calguns members here who have posted in other threads that they are capable of doing the legal transfers.
