A good Wasr is as good as any. Buy that, an Npap, Opap or something. Spend the rest on ammo. An AK is a rudimentary tool and not a expensive precision gun.

I am well aware of that. I was only talking about Russian guns since on the last page we were talking about a Krebs based on a Saiga before people started talking about OPAP and NPAP and papadaps... and what not.

My understanding is the Opap is a rpk receiver and the Npap is AKM, and they are phasing out the Opap for the N. May be fud but I recall hearing that. Anyone know if that's fact?

...and I was replying to user theneko quoting Cashrip's comment specifically about OPAPs. Following the quoted text is key.

In any case... The message to the OP should be buy any decent AK and get to shooting.

and I thought it was expensive at a little less than $1k a couple years ago, doh.

Any guru's in the Folsom / Sacramento area to help with tuning my AK? I want to get my hands dirty but, also want help to identify or prevent making gremlins in the process.

It depends on how much you want to spend. IMO if you are going to fork out the cash for a Russian Saiga, whether its converted or not your better off spending the $$$ and buying a Arsenal SAM7SF. For $1400 you can get a Bulgarian Rifle thats every bit as good as a Russian rifle. Not only that, but the SAM7 Series rifles have hot hammer foraged then milled receivers along with CHF barrels. I have both Russian AK's and Bulgy AK's. You cant go wrong with either and they are just as good as one another IMO. The only reason I'd choose to buy a Russian over a Bulgy AK in this market is if its going to be a safe queen to collect. Thats it...

accurate and AK don't go together very well.

This is not meant to in anyway put down the AK platform. The AK is the most produced rifle in history, very reliable, and can be fun, but accurate it is not. It is entirely possible to get an off the shelf AK that might be as good as 3MOA though many will be worse, but getting into the sub MOA range , what most people would call the minimum for accurate shooting, is nearly impossible. One could put a bunch of work into an AK and make it reasonably accurate but it will be very costly and will probably require ongoing tuning to keep it that way.

3k is probably the highest budget anyone has allotted for an ak....ever lol. Thats scar 17 money plus 300 towards a wasr. The thing with the ak is you dont necessarily need to have a high budget to get a reliable rifle. If i had 3k id get a sam 7 and spend the rest on ammo, nice mags, maybe a railed top cover if you wanna mount optics in a normal fashion, a ar stock adapter if you're into that and then a good range membership or some steel targets for BLM shooting.

I would be shooting steel long range, 2-4 MOA baseline would be acceptable.

My SCAR 16 has a similar action as the AK, very clean cycling.
