I think he mentioned the bolt action because this is the semiautomatic rifles section, rather than the manually operated. Sometimes you need to shake things up though

        To the OP -

Like others have said, use odorless mineral spirits to clean all the metal parts. Do NOT let it touch the wood unless you want to see the finish disappear. The sun works well to get it out of the stock. It will be dripping out!

My technique was to use a capped 2" diameter PVC pipe that is just the perfect size to put the entire barrel and action in. Then add OMS and let it do the work. It's worked like a champ on two guns so far. You don't even need to glue the cap in place. For the smaller parts, I submerge them in a small tray or bin.

You MUST lightly oil the parts after the mineral spirits bath. It sucks all the oil out of the metal and will make it completely dry and vulnerable to rust.

Found a source for Brass HERE...

At just over 45.00/100 cases and with a light load... it's fantastic for shooting paper. If you ever plan to hunt with it, then you can always pick up 20 rounds of HUNTING AMMO for just under 15.00 a box.
That's the brass I use. Shocked that they have it in stock. It's out of stock for 11 months out of the year, so buy now if you want some. I've been using it mostly for gallery loads, so it lasts forever. Same brass as Wolf Gold/PPU/Hotshot brands. (Hotshot is the brand of Serbian ammo packaged in a box that looks like a giant American flag...You can find it at Big 5 often).

              RE: Carbine
OK, I stand corrected on the carbine recoil. Hadn't considered that. I will proudly wear my egg on the face today.

As for BLM, here is the fire restriction order as of January. Notice that in the first paragraph it lists which counties it pertains to. Imperial county isn't one of them.

Happy to help! Feel free to PM me if you need any more guidance.

Oh, and wear gloves when using the mineral spirits. It won't burn, but it will suck the oil completely out of your hands. It's more annoying than anything.

I did the same thing with the PVC pipe. Home depot already had sections of it cut... gave me the idea to use it.

^ yep! All good PPU brass too.

I wish I could take credit for the PVC pipe idea, but I'm positive I saw it on YouTube. It makes cleaning these guns thoroughly very simple.

I picked it up earlier today and cleaned up the bolt and the magazine.

It's a 1930 Tula octagon with matching serial on the bolt/barrel/magazine/bayonet and stockplate.

tomorrow I'm going to clean it up even more... this is a very nice rifle and I will not sporterize it.

Will post pics when it's done!

Any idea where you can shoot it around here (I'm in Anaheim) I just want to shoot a few rounds to see if it's sighted in properly and if it works as expected.

You could go to field time in Stanton. You will need non magnetic ammo though. Barring that get ready for a trip out to the desert
