    Mosin Nagant M91/30 7.62x54R

A few days ago I saw Hickok45 shooting a few Mosin Nagants. Since I really love the look of this rifle I decided to go and buy one. I lucked out and found one with a hex-top. So now it's in jail for another 9 days.

    Mosin Nagant M91/30 7.62x54R Excellent

    Anyway, I know:
    • I have to remove the Cosmoline (already looking into cleaning up the gun on youtube and various other sites)
    • The ammo has a steel core and is corrosive.
    • I am going to keep it in original condition (no scope/no new stock etc etc)

Now since I'm new to this type of caliber (I only shot 22/9mm/5.56/223) where would be a good place to buy surplus ammo in SoCal? Would it also be possible to buy lead core 7.62x54r ammo instead of steel core (my favorite ranges don't allow steel core) I'm not worried about the corrosive aspect since I always clean my guns same/next day.

Nothing I say is financial advice!

Great riffle for the money. If you're thinking about reloading and want to shoot at most of the ranges out here in SoCal... I use these...

This is a good deal from a fellow Cal Gunner. Plus you can save the brass if you ever decide to get into reloading (which is incredibly easy and cheap).

    Good luck!

Nice find on the hex receiver, I was fortunate enough to pick one up from a fellow calgunner a few years ago. Would also recommend reloading if you are interested, the lead core stuff isn't cheap unless you luck out and come up on some Yugo surplus lead core

You can remove cosmo by using odorless mineral spirts. I used it on my Yugoslav M70 OPAP. You can take all the wood off and summerge barreled action, it will slide off as a brown/rustic goop.

I tried wrapping it in a trash bag and sitting it in the hot sun. Too slow.

You should buy the ammo online! the going price is around 0.25/round shipped.
I like the carbine versions better. the 91/30 kicks too much for me.

Something else you may not know about the Mosin Nagant: It's a "bolt-action rifle".

Lol...I was just thinking the same thing. I thought I was in the wrong section for a split sec.

Probably get a lot more interest in the c&r section.

Be careful with that Mosin, they seem to multiply very quickly. I started with a big 5 91/30 almost two years ago. Now own 91/30 sniper, m44, Finnish m39 and m27 along with that first 91/30.

Don't be afraid of the wolf/wpa/brown bear stuff. your mn will eat that too, steel case so no reloading, but, if you pick up the cases, you can recycle them and supplement your ammo funds. i usually get 10 bucks for 2, 6 gallon pails full of spent steel case.

The era of non-magnetic 7.62x54R for 0.25/rd is long gone...

I have been hand loading what most people call 'gallery' loads... and I can shoot a couple of hundred rounds without dislocating my shoulder and the gun shoot spot on at 150 yards.

@ 0.18 per round (I don't cast my own bullets yet...) it's one of my cheapest rifles to shoot.

That's steel core... good luck finding a range in SoCal that will let you shoot it.
