    Proper bipod mounting location?

Where is the correct place to mount my bipod on an SPR type AR with an 18" barrel & a MI-SSK 15" free float? As close to the muzzle as possible or a certain distance back from the end of the forearm?

Forward. It changes leverage as well as stays out of the way. Just like usually you fold the legs forward to keep them out of the way

As far forward as you can without the legs protruding beyond the muzzle when folded.

If you mount it too far back toward the receiver, the bipod will act as a center fulcrum and will make it hard to hold the rifle steady.

Depends on your application. I used to have it as far out as possible on my rifle but when I took a class that had me doing rapid engagements at different elevations I found that it was a little too far for me to adjust rapidly.

But really, if you're just doing some bench shooting, put it as far forward as possible to maximize stability.

For precisions as far forward as possible with going past the barrel when folded as another poster has said. When using a Grip Pod type bipod on a AR carbine @ 2-3" forward of the magwell will allow you to pivot left to right easier to engage moving/multiple targets faster.

I mount it as far forward as I can still grab it and not break shooting position.

I've always heard that you are supposed to mount it forward. That said, I don't own a bipod, but it makes sense to have it in a forward position.

                  This is the answer,

And it is pretty simple actually.

your fulcrum point moves forward, that means that the

distance of movement at the buttstock lessens changes the degrees of deflection the farther forward the fulcrum point goes.
In other words, the closer to you the pivot point (Bipod) is, the quicker the barrel will point in a different direction given the same amount of movement at the buttstock versus what it had when the pivot point (Bipod) was farther away.

Try it with a pencil. It will come clear.

Heck, try it with a rifle. It works there too.
