    Differences Between DoubleStar and Stag...

I was wiping down this Stag today with some Militec trying to even out it's finish and in doing so I was holding my DoubleStars and the Stag side by side and noticed they're not 100% the same.

    Differences...

The DoubleStar has more material removed while the Stag leaves more material behind in the area above the safety selector. Only thing I can think of is that this has something to do with an auto-sear? The DoubleStar would fit an auto-sear while the Stag is designed such that it couldn't accommodate an auto-sear? Sorry if this is n00bish but I'm a AR n00b so...

FWIW - The quality of the finishing on the DoubleStars are a lot nicer IMHO. The Stag has a classic finish like you'd expect to see, very matte, zero reflection which I suppose is good from a tactical standpoint. However it picks up smudges and fingernail scratches and such a lot more readily. The DoubleStar is hard coat anodized and the surface is much more uniform.

Only place where the Stag beats out the DoubleStar is in the quality of the finishing in the backstrap area above the grip. Maybe the sanding around the mag well area of the Stag is a little nicer as well, however the quality of the work inside the trigger guard isn't as nice as the DoubleStar.

    Regards,

    James R.

Yep, the more meat in the one lower will prevent a DIAS from dropping right in.

The lingo is "low shelf" and "high shelf" that represents the cut out area near the rear takedown.

Stag is cut by CMT, DoubleStar is cut by LAR and JVP. Yes, there will be differences between CMT, JVP, LAR and LMT...

CMT, LAR and LMT cut probably 90% of the receivers on the market...

Unless they're legally obligated to leave that metal there I kinda wonder why they machine the thing to have a more limited scope of use? Do they think they're being more socially responsible?

I think Imma give my dad the Stag...that way both of my lowers are matched, not that it does anything for ya...but the DoubleStar seems more nicely finished on the whole.

Makes you wonder, with so few doing the machine work, there's probably even less companies making the forgings. I've seen the forgings, you can pick them up w/o an FFL for like $20 each. Would make a neat paperweight...

Right right, I found a Central with a DoD contract when I was double checking so I figured I had remembered correctly, guess not.

                    LMT is Lauer?

Yeah, none of the companies that actually "makes" receivers makes the forgings. The forgings are blank billets heated then squished inbetween two mold pieces at high temperature. Then they are sold to companies who cut them. LMT, CMT and LAR are the three biggest contractors for all the smaller 'maufacturers'. CMT has their house brand "Stag". LMT sells their product under their name. LAR sells theirs under the "Grizzly" brand. All three companies logo their receivers for other companies, and some of the smaller manufacturers have had their brand embossed on receivers from several different companies...

Does anyone know who made the lowers for American Spirit Arms? They as a builder are now out of business but were from Scottsdale and Phoenix.

Only place where the Stag beats out the DoubleStar
"Beats out" how? Does it shoot straighter? Has one outlasted the other? Has there been a failure of some sort?

                            How?

Why "in the quality of the finishing in the backstrap area above the grip", of course.

He is saying the Stag "beats out", or has a "better" quality of finishing in the backstrap area above the grip than the Double Star does. In fact he said that this was the only area that the Stag beat out the Double Star.

I'm sure that if the Stag had outlasted the Double Star then he would have posted something like "The only places where the Stag beats out the DoubleStar is in the quality of the finishing in the backstrap area above the grip and the lack of catastrophic failure."

But it's late. I need to drink 15 raw eggs and get some sleep before my rimfire tactical assault class tomorrow morning at o' five hundred hours. The "platform" is only as good as its "operator", don't you know.
