I'm seeking some reccomendations on which ammo to purchase. I want to stock up on this. I haven't bought or built a gun yet. I am thinking of getting a saiga and/or an ak or sks. Correct me if I'm wrong but these cyle steel casing ammo w/ no problems? So I've been looking at herters 122 fmj, tula, and brown bear. There all closely priced. A little difference in bullet types. I also don't know if theres any lead in the slugs or if they are steel. I think penetration and hopefully accuracy is what I'd favor. Which is going to give me best pennetration? I'd please appreciate any comments on issues or experiences youv'e guys had w/ bulk ammo on these guns. thanks

Wait a little longer before you start to stock up, prices are coming down. In the meantime, google is your friend and do some reading or youtube video watching. Steel case is perfectly fine based on the firearms of interest you listed. Additionally, buy a small amount of each brand and type of ammo, test it out first and see how it runs in your firearm and then record the accuracy. Buy in bulk based on the performance.
FX-05 Xiuhcoatl posted some GT, just so happens that people like MAC or Plouffedaddy have done vids on the performance of that brand/round, so you can make an educated buy based on their reviews. However, as stated, one should always test the ammo in their go-to firearm. Last thing you want is a bunch of ammo that FTFs in your firearm.
All that said, buy your firearm first based on what you want to achieve (accuracy vs precision, hunting vs target, reliability, versatility, range capability) , chances are you could change your mind on what caliber you want and what platform you want. Feel free to ask questions, but I strongly suggest you do a lot of reading first based on an enhanced & refined vision of what you want to achieve with a firearm. You'll change you mind several times, I guarantee it!

^ yep. exactly and from that source. SG ammo almost always has the cheapest cost per round+shipping 7.62x39 golden tiger most of the year.
LAX ammo might have some Tula right now for a fraction of a cent cheaper per round but imo Golden Tiger is the best and worth that little extra bit.
Herters is reboxed Tula, Herters box bullets even say Tula on the casing. I shoot a crap ton of Tula/Herters non-lacquer coated steel case 122grain target practicing with few problems for as cheap as they are. For penetration still with the fmj versus the soft point or hollow point.
Those guns you mentioned cycle just fine with steel case. In fact the only "casing related" damage/failure was when I was shooting PMC brass case at a "fast rate of fire" out of an AK, one of the casings I noticed got shaved into and had a burr sticking out. If anything, steel case is better for an AK in my experience.
I also shoot nothing but steel case out of an AR15 chambered in 7.62x39 built in a configuration approprate for reliably cycling 7.62x39. A few hundred rounds so far and its still operating no problem.NRA Endowment MemberComment

I just had another order delivered yesterday of this ammo from this retailer. I can't say enough good things about this ammo or this retailer. I have placed at least 5 orders from them on this. I have put this through my (now sold) SKS and my current AR's in 7,62x39.
I have also ran the Tul and have good results and have no problems running this, just prefer the GT if I have a choice

If you want to stock up for HD or SHTF, Golden Tiger is superior to Tula/Wolf because it is sealed and lacquer coated, rendering it water/moisture/atmosphere proof, plus it is just really good ammo. SGAmmo is the only place I have seen recently that stocks it. My SKS loves it.NRA Certified Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor, Shotgun Instructor and Range Safety Officer

Rob GR has a sensible point. I've never paid attention to the price of 7.62 before. Any gueses what that same 1000 rounds of golden tiger sold for 1.5+ year ago? I just have a suspicion of a new tax or shipping ammo becoming complicated soon. I'm appreciating your responses and the story w/ the brass. Nice links, and sounds like SG is a good place. Is golden tigers slug lead coated w/ copper? Anyway, please keep your comments coming. thanksComment

Unless you plan on needing to shoot through things like car doors I suggest going with a soft point (SP) round.
I saw a video a while ago where they compared the terminal ballistics of a 124Gr FMJ, HP and SP round on ballistic gelatin. The FMJ pretty much just zipped on through, the HP had a little more dramatic result but the SP was pretty devastating.
Here's a vid but it's not the same one I saw
Personally I prefer the 154Gr SP from Tula/Herters because, bigger-bullets-are-better and each round is like hitting them with three 55Gr 5.56 rounds.Comment

My AR shoots Golden Tiger and Tula just fine. The only thing you cant do with steel case is reload it. (and some ARs jam with it, but then you're primarily referring to .223)My AR is 7.62x39, so that if/when we get invaded, I can shoot their ammo back at them!

GOLDEN TIGER is terrible, horrible ammo that will blow up your gun and possibly give you a venereal disease in the process.
Related: I was shooting Golden Tiger one time and was struck by lightning, so take that for what it's worth.
tl;dr DO NOT BUY GOLDEN TIGER AMMOComment
