Norinco MAK 90 modifications question

I am curious if you have ever been hassled by the police when out shooting?I legally own a Norinco MAK 90 that was registered with Cal DOJ in January 2001. I am interested in replacing the thumbhole stock and fore grips, as well as the trigger assembly group, rendering it Federal 922R compliant.
My question is, will I run afoul of Cal DOJ by making these conversions? I find nothing in the licensing paperwork or online at DOJs's website addressing this issue!
Also, do you carry a copy of your registration paperwork with you when you do shoot?
It was my understanding, and correct me if I am wrong that you sent in a form and $25 and that was it. How does one know if they really entered your gun into the magic data base in the sky?Comment

One other question for you pros:
Are there any differences between a MAK90 and the MAK90 Sporter? Or are they physically identical in every way except for the name? I think all the ones I have shot were Sporters, some were it had been electro penciled in and others stamped like mine is. I cannot remember ever seeing or shootin one that only said MAK90.Comment
